RENO ? Louisiana Tech?s 11-2 win over Nevada in game one of a Western Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Friday at Idlewild Park snapped the Wolf Pack?s seven-game winning streak.
Nevada came back in the second game of the day to win a slugfest 14-9.
Tech (18-28, 6-10 WAC) used a strong pitching performance from freshman hurler Krissi Oliver (11-11) to win the opener of the three-game series. The Glendale, Arizona, native allowed only six hits and two earned runs in the complete-game victory.
The Lady Techsters, who were one week removed from an improbable 2-1 win over No. 22 ranked Fresno State, scored their 11 runs on 11 hits and four Wolf Pack errors.
?I thought the best thing we did in the first game was continue to add runs to our lead,? said Techster head coach Sarah Dawson. ?Krissi did a good job on the mound of keeping the ball on the ground and we played good defense.
?We kept reminding our girls this week (of the win over Fresno State) in preparation for these games. It definitely has helped our confidence, but we can?t rest on it. That game is over. We had to find a way to come out today and beat Nevada on our terms.?
Tech jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first and then added three more runs in the top of the third before Nevada plated a single run in the bottom half of the frame to make the score 4-1.
A Jessica Elson two-run single in the sixth made the score 6-1 before the Techsters blew the game open with a five-run seventh inning.
Elson led Tech with two hits and four RBI while Emma Barnes, Danielle Sheridan and Regan Clark each added two hits.
In the second game of the day, Nevada jumped out to an 8-1 lead through three innings of play before the Techsters scored two runs in the fourth and five more in the fifth to tie the game at 8-8.
?We got off to a slow start in the second game,? Dawson said. ?Pitching wise none of the girls had much success. However, I was proud of the way we swung the bats and how we fought back to tie it up.?
After Tech tied the game, Nevada scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to reclaim a 12-8 lead and never look back.
Kristin Rupp took the loss in relief, allowing nine hits and seven earned runs in 2.2 innings of work.
Sheridan, Clark, Ashley Cameron and Elson each totaled three hits while Carly White added three hits. Sheridan, Cameron and White all homered for the Lady Techsters.
Cameron?s home run ? a three-run shot in the fifth ? was the 23rd of her career, giving her outright claim to the Tech career title. It was also the 10th of the season for the Abbeville, La., native, tying her own single season mark set a year ago.
