RUSTON, La. -
Game Notes | | Coach Sherry on opponent
Louisiana Tech will open its 2010 women's soccer season on Friday at 7 p.m. at Stephen F. Austin.
The Lady Techsters take the field for the first time since last season's school-best 12-7 record. They return eight starters and 12 letterwinners in head coach Kevin Sherry's fourth year at Louisiana Tech including forward Kiva Gresham who returns for her senior season at Tech. Last season, the Albuquerque, N.M. native broke the school record for assists in a season with seven and is just two behind the career leader, Kat McCullough.
Stephen F. Austin opens their 2010 season after a 10-8-2 record and third place finish in the Southland Conference last season.
"They are a very strong team and one of the best teams in the region," Sherry said. "We know that we are in for a real tough game, but that's what we want and we are ready for those tough games. If we can handle the speed that they have up front, then we should be alright."
Friday's game will be the first with their new head coach Tony Armato who just finished a very successful seven-year stint at Rollins College. Armato has plenty to work with as the Ladyjacks return much of their firepower with 10 starters and 15 letterwinners back for another season.
The overall series between the two schools is tied at 2-2, with Tech winning the last meeting 2-0 in Ruston. LA Tech is 2-4 all time in season openers including last season's 3-2 double-overtime win against Lamar.
