Freshman goalkeeper Caitlin Updyke was named the Defensive Player of the Week in the Western Athletic Conference on Monday.

"She deserved it," said head coach Kevin Sherry. "She had great communication and poise in goal, which gave the team a lot of confidence. It couldn't have been easy coming in as a freshman, but she handled herself really well. She looked confident and that confidence spread through the whole team. The defense in front of her played a great game as a result."

Updyke, a native of Broomfield, Colo., made the most of her first collegiate game on Sunday helping the Tech defense to a 1-0 shutout at Lamar. She recorded six saves as the Lady Techsters improved to 1-1 on the season.

"Caitlin has been working hard with Cat Buchanan and Rebecca Alvarez," Sherry said about his three goalkeepers. "This award is a result of the team effort by all the goalkeepers who support and push each other every day."

Utah State's Shantel Flanary was the WAC Offensive Player of the Week by scoring two goals in two games to lead the Aggies to a 2-0 start.

Updyke and the Lady Techsters host Sam Houston State in their home opener on Friday at 5 p.m. at Lady Techster Soccer Field.
