HOUSTON, Texas - Louisiana Tech (7-7; 0-0 WAC) defeated in-state foe Southeastern Louisiana, 3-1 (25-17; 17-25; 25-14; 25-21) Friday afternoon in their second game of the Husky Classic in Houston, Texas at Sharp Gym. The Lady Techsters are now 1-1 in the tournament and 3-0 against the Lions of Southeastern Louisiana this season.
"We did a nice job of bouncing back this afternoon after Southern Miss was near perfect against us this morning," said head coach Matt Sonnichsen.
Redshirt Junior Nataliya Panova had what is easily her breakout performance of the 2011 campaign. Panova posted 17 kills along with a .429 hitting percentage, three service aces and 12 digs defensively. Her outstanding performance against the Lions of Southeastern Louisiana marks her first double-double of the season along with a season high in kills.
"We were able to get Nataliya back to her outside position for a full match and it has been quite a long rehab process for her after not playing competitively for almost 20 months," said Sonnichsen. "With Marcella (Braz) and Bridget's (Benditz) talent, along with the returner's experience of Clara (Vido) and Nataliya, we are getting better each week."
Clara Vido also recorded a double-double for the Lady Techsters with 15 kills and 18 digs. Today's double-double marks Vido's seventh of the season, setting a new career high for the sophomore outside hitter.
Caitlin Germany got into the action as well posting 9 kills and a season high four service aces.
As a team the Lady Techsters outhit Southeastern Louisiana .246-.209 and recorded seven more service aces than the Lions, totaling 13 on the afternoon. Tech led statistically in nearly every category throughout the match, faltering only slightly in the second set, when Southeastern's Elizabeth Ramee took advantage, posting 3 kills against the Lady Techsters in the second and totaling 7 kills on the night.
Tech looks to carry their momentum into tomorrow's tournament finale against the host team, Houston Baptist. The match is slated to begin at 1 p.m. Live stats will be available for the match on http://www.sidearmstats.com/hbu/wvball/.
