Louisiana Tech's volleyball team are primed and ready for a healthy dose of tournament action as the Lady Techsters travel to the campus of Southeastern Louisiana to compete in the Tangi Tourism Lion Classic Friday and Saturday against four different opponents.
Tech (1-6, 0-0 WAC) will face off against UTPA and Southern University Friday starting bright and early with a 9 a.m. start time against the Broncs before taking on the Jaguars later in the day at 3 p.m. at University Center in Hammond, La.
For Saturday's lineup, the Lady Techsters will compete against Weber State at 10 a.m., before ending the tournament with a match against the host team, Southeastern Louisiana, at 2 p.m.
"These matches are going to be important for us because we are going to be able to get our team some more experience," head coach Adriano de Souza said. "It is important that we go there and play and compete and embrace our competition in every set. Every set we play this weekend is an opportunity to learn more about our game and what we can do when we are competing against other teams."
Tech will head into the tournament with a little added confidence after notching its first win of the season against Grambling State in straight sets in the team's home-opener. The team also has a combined record of 25-5 all-time in head-to-head matches against all four of its opponents this weekend.
Offensively, the Techsters are guided by sophomore setter Maria Coelho, who has 8.32 assists per set and 208 overall in seven matches. Junior Emily Maher has also been a threat with the ball recently with 46 total kills and an average of just under 2.00 per set.
The Tangi Tourism Lion Classic will mark the last regular season tournament the Lady Techsters will participate in after having competed against quality opponents in two straight road tournaments this year.
