Black Holds Off Gray with 6-3 Win in Game 5

RUSTON, La. - With a chance to clinch the series, the Gray team could not contain the Black team's bats and fell, 6-3, in the fifth game of the Fall World Series Friday night at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park.

The Black team led off the scoring with a three spot in the third inning and added two additional runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 5-0 lead. Gray cut the lead to three with a two-run home run by Bre'shon Kimbell in the sixth inning, but Black answered back with a run scored in the bottom half of the inning for a 6-2 lead.

Adam Derouen started for Black and pitched five full innings of scoreless baseball and held the Gray team to just four hits, while striking out five of the 19 batters he faced. Derouen was relieved by Clark Carlisle, who gave up two runs off four hits in one inning of work before Joshua Horton started the seventh inning before giving up a run off two hits. Ben Carlisle pitched the final inning to close it out for Black.

Phil Maton pitched into the fourth inning as a starter for Gray. Maton gave up three runs off three hits, while totaling seven strikeouts on the night. Jared Keating and Hunter Layne pitched the final 2.1 innings for Gray and gave up a combined three runs off four hits.

Senior Tyler Ervine led the Black team at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance with two doubles and four runs batted in, while Colby Johnson also totaled two hits in four at bats with a double and two runs scored.

Lain Kranz put together the only two-hit performance of the night for the Gray team with a 2-for-3 effort, while every other starter for the Gray recorded one hit apiece in the loss. Kimbell led with two RBI after hitting a two-run home run that cleared the left field wall in the sixth inning.

Gray now leads the series 3-2 over the Black team with Game 6 scheduled for 3 p.m. tomorrow.
