BATON ROUGE, La. - Louisiana Tech will travel to south Louisiana this weekend to compete in a three-game series against Southern on Saturday and Sunday.
The three-game series includes a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. and a single game Sunday at 1 p.m. at Lady Jaguar Field.
The Lady Techsters (9-10) and Southern (1-21) have only met twice in the history of the programs with LA Tech leading the series 2-0, including an 11-2 win earlier this year in Lake Charles. The only other meeting was also an 11-2 victory by Tech in 2005.
"Right now Southern is struggling," said Tech head coach Mark Montgomery. "We got here late and this was an open weekend, and we tried to fill it the best we could. There weren't many options. We are going to make this weekend about us. It's 100 percent about us.
"We want to make every hustle play we can. We want to make every diving play we can; turn every double play we can. If someone doesn't make the hustle play or give the effort we are going to make changes. We are trying to take the last couple of steps forward before we enter conference play. This is a great chance for us to raise the bar."
Tech is coming off a 1-0 loss at Stephen F. Austin Wednesday in a mid-week game, but the Lady Techsters won four out of five last weekend at Northwestern State's tournament.
Montgomery will utilize all five of his pitchers this weekend against the Jaguars as Michelle Jones (6-5, 2.49 ERA), Erin Kipp (3-2, 4.40), Melanie Goff (0-1, 5.25), Janna Frandrup (0-2, 5.57) and Anna Cross (0-0, 7.00) have all seen action in the circle this year.
"I do think you will see some mixing and matching throughout the game," Montgomery said. "I don't want to ask someone to throw the full seven innings if we don't have to. We also want to get Anna some more innings this weekend. Instead of getting one here and one there, we might try to get two out of her in a couple of games. I don't think you will see anyone go more than about five innings."
Offensively, Tech continues to see a balanced attack led by Erin Kipp (.442, seven doubles, 14 RBI, 9-9 SB), Kristen Miles (.368, 11 runs, 11-12 RBI), Cross (.356, 13 runs, 12 RBI, 14-14 SB), Meghan Knowles (.353, 9 runs, 5 RBI), Amanda Krueger (.333, 13 runs, 15 RBI, 9-10 SB), Alayna Kipp (.318, 5 RBI), Melanie Goff (.313, 4 RBI) and Janna Frandrup (.281, 6 RBI).
Southern has struggled in every phase of the game this year, sporting a .156 batting average and a 7.57 team earned run average while committing 51 errors on the year.
