Oct. 4, 2014 LAFAYETTE, La. - Louisiana Tech's Haley Ballinger put together her best tennis of the fall season this weekend winning her first singles flight at the Ragin' Cajuns Fall Classic hosted by Louisiana-Lafayette.
The freshman from Monroe, Louisiana won three matches to take flight six while Taly Merker and Tarrannum Handa each notched two singles wins as well.
"Overall it was a successful tournament," head coach Chad Camper said. "Haley really hit her peak. She was not only playing good but playing smart. She is still not near her potential so I am excited to see how she develops the rest of the season."
Ballinger made easy work in the quarterfinals with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Natale Duran of Southeastern Louisiana. It then took a win in the third set super tiebreaker in the semis to defeat Andrea Nenu of McNeese State.
She was then up 5-3 in the finals against Nicholls State's Katya Nakonnechnaya before the opposition retired due to injury.
Handa was also impressive in her collegiate debut for the Lady Techsters, besting Southern Miss' Alex Kitchen and UNO's Hafsa Laraibi before falling in the finals of flight three.
"Tarrannum performed well in singles," Camper said. "She will need to play more consistently day in and day out for us this season. We got a good look at her ability this weekend."
Also playing in flight six, Merker advanced to the semifinals before she was upended. The junior then rebounded to win the consolation finals, 6-1, 6-2.
Next up for LA Tech is the ITA Southern Regionals on Oct. 10-13 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
