Techsters Use Team Effort in Win over Centenary
RUSTON - Six Louisiana Tech players scored in double figures as the ninth-ranked Lady Techsters downed Centenary 97-47 before 2,413 fans at the Thomas Assembly Center Monday night.
Sultra Harding and Trina Frierson led the way with 16 points each while Aarica Ray added 14 points, Erica Smith 13, Amber Obaze 12 and Toya George 11 as Tech (15-2) won its 13th straight game.
No Lady Techster starter played more than 18 minutes and none of the Tech starting five touched the court during the last 15 minutes of the game.
"This was exactly what we needed; exactly what we needed," said Tech head coach Kurt Budke. "We were able to get our young people a lot of time tonight and rest our starters. You can see the flaws a lot of the young ones have, but you can also see the potential of the young ones. I wish we could get them more time in the conference games, but it is just hard."
After Centenary grabbed a brief 2-0 lead on a Demetria Dorsey lay up to open the game, Tech responded with a 32-4 run over the next nine minutes to grab a commanding 32-6 advantage and the midway point of the first half.
The Lady Techsters hit 7 of 12 three pointers in the first half to build a 54-18 halftime advantage as Tech finished the night with a season high 10 three-pointers, including four by Ray and three by George.
Despite the large halftime deficit and only a 25 percent field goal percentage in the first half, Centenary started the second half strong, hitting 9 of its first 15 shots after the intermission. Van'esha Brabson scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while Julie Danieles added 10 points to lead Centenary.
"I was very impressed with Centenary and their effort tonight," Budke said. "They were outmatched but they never quit and they competed until the very end. David (Winkler) and his staff should be commended."
On the night Tech hit 50 percent (37-74) of its field goals, including 10 of 19 from beyond the arc, while outrebounding the much smaller Ladies squad 56-35. Harding led Tech on the boards with a career-high nine rebounds while Ray and Frierson added eight rebounds each.
Tech returns to action Thursday night when the Lady Techsters face Boise State at 8 p.m.
