RUSTON - Tenth-ranked Louisiana Tech was thrilled to finally be at home Tuesday night hosting Tulane.
The Green Wave weren't so happy to be the guests as the Lady Techsters dominated the overmatched Tulane team in a 96-37 victory before 3,277 fans at the Thomas Assembly Center.
Senior guard Amber Obaze scored 13 of her game-high 18 points as Tech (3-0) jumped out to a 20-6 lead at the 12:41 mark of the first half. The Dallas, Texas, native hit her first six shots from the field during the run as the Lady Techsters quickly upped the advantage to 54-16 at the half and never looked back.
"Tulane played us so close last year and caused us a lot of problems," said Techster head coach Kurt Budke. "The girls remembered how tough of a battle that was last year and still didn't feel real good about how the Illinois game ended. It was a great effort tonight."
For the game Obaze hit 8 of 13 field goals and 2 of 3 free throws while also recording three rebounds and two assists in 22 minutes of action. When Obaze wasn't hurting the Green Wave, the one-two punch of Trina Frierson and Amisha Carter were as the two Techster forwards combined for 31 points and 15 rebounds.
Carter recorded her second straight double double with 15 points and a career-high 14 rebounds while Frierson hit 8 of 12 field goals to score 16 points.
"(Frierson and Carter) did a nice job of finding each other down low," said Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton. "They're versatile. They can hit inside and outside and that makes them tough to defend. I think their overall intensity was the key to tonight's game."
Tech hit 18 of its first 21 shots from the field to build a 40-10 lead at the 7:51 mark of the opening half. Thirty Green Wave turnovers and only a 26 percent field goal percentage (12-46) kept Tulane from ever mounting any type of comeback.
"This was our first game of the season at home," Obaze said. "We wanted to let everyone know we are still here. Everyone played well tonight."
For the game Tech shot 54 percent (38-70) from the field and outrebounded Tulane 43-30.
The Lady Techsters return to action Sunday when they travel to Knoxville, Tenn., to face No. 3 ranked Tennessee at 2 p.m.
