White Downs Blue 13-10 in Bone Bowl I

Posted Apr 12, 2003 20:35:14 White Downs Blue 13-10 in Bone Bowl I

RUSTON - Zac Champion tossed a 12-yard touchdown to Freddie King and All-American candidate Josh Scobee added two field goals to lead the White Team to a 13-6 victory over the Blue Team in Bone Bowl I at Joe Aillet Stadium Saturday evening.

Champion, who signed with the Bulldogs in February out of Bessemer Academy in Alabama, led the White Team on a 11-play, 70-yard scoring drive to open the third quarter and found King in the left corner of the endzone on a first down pass attempt. Scobee's extra point gave the White Team a 7-6 lead.

"I was pleased," said Champion, who completed 3-of-4 passes for 53 yards in his only action of the day. "I couldn't have been happier. Freddie made an incredible catch and the offensive line did a good job of blocking on the play. There was nothing for me to do but throw the football."

On the ensuing Blue Team possession, Jerron Wishom intercepted Chris Norwood's flanker pass. Maxie Causey then hit Alton Bryant on a 53-yard pass to set up Scobee's 26-yard field goal and a 10-6 lead. The Longview, Texas, kicker added a 33-yard field goal two possessions later for the final points of the game.

"It's always very, very difficult (offensively in the spring)," Bicknell said. "A lot of people got to play and some of them weren't for sure what they were doing on every play. I was kind of frustrated by it; however, I think all in all, it was fun for the players."

After almost two entire quarters of nothing but defense, senior signal caller Luke McCown opened the scoring, giving the Blue Team a 6-0 lead on a six-yard touchdown pass to D.J. Curry as time expired in the first half. Bric Lanford's extra point was no good.

In addition to Champion's efforts, Maxie Causey (5-10 for 72 yards) and Matt Kubik (5-8 for 66 yards) each led the White Team in the passing game while Ralph Davis carried the ball 15 times for 37 yards. Byron Santiago recorded a team-high nine tackles while Santiago, Travon Brown and Jemelle Cage each added a sack. Jerron Wishom registered an interception for the White Team whil Gavin Cato added a fumble recovery.

McCown led the Blue Team offensively through the air, completing 19 of 31 passes for 175 yards and zero interceptions while Chris Norwood and D.J. Curry each recorded five receptions. Danny Wilson led the Blue Team ground attach with 23 yards on six carries while Ryan Moats added four carries for seven yards.

Defensively, Robert Burrell led the Blue Team with a pair of interceptions while Romedro Davis and Antonio Crow each registered five tackles. Chris Van Hoy and Crow also recorded one sack each.

"(The defense) is just trying to get some respect," Burrell said. "The theme this year is respect. I can't talk about (the interceptions) that's how good I feel."
