RUSTON - Louisiana Tech senior Cheryl Ford has received numerous national and state honors during her four years as a standout on the nationally-ranked Lady Techster basketball team.

However, following her stellar collegiate career, Ford is now receiving an honor a little closer to home as former Summerfield High School prep star will participate in Cheryl Ford Day Friday, an honor bestowed by the Claiborne Parish Police Jury.

Activities for the day include a reception at the Claiborne Police Jury Office Complex from 2 to 4 p.m. where Cheryl and her family will be honored followed by a visit to the Boys and Girls Club. The general public is invited.

During her high school playing days, Ford lettered under Greg Scriber at Summerfield where she was a three-time first team all-state selection, three-time District Most Valuable Player and a member of the 1998 U.S. Olympic 17 and under team.

Ford recently led Tech to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament while earning her second consecutive Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year Award along with the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Player of the Year accolade.

The future WNBA star averaged 15.7 points and 12.9 rebounds per game as a senior ranking No. 3 in the country in rebounding. Her 24 double doubles and 438 rebounds were both WAC single season records.

Ford is the daughter of Bonita Ford of Haynesville and ex-Tech Bulldog Karl Malone of the Utah Jazz.
