Techsters Host Boise State Thursday
RUSTON - Two of the top offensive teams in the Western Athletic Conference meet Thursday night at the Thomas Assembly Center as ninth-ranked Louisiana Tech (13-2, 6-1 WAC) hosts Boise State (6-10, 3-4) at 7 p.m.
The Lady Techsters enter the game ranked No. 1 in the league in points per game at 83.6 and field goal percentage at 43.5 percent while the Broncos are third in scoring (67.1) and second in shooting (43.2).
Techster head coach Kurt Budke said that Boise State's triangle offense is tough to defend, especially considering the Broncos are shooting a league-best 37.2 percent from the three-point line.
"Boise State does a great job running their offense and they make it extremely difficult to guard them, especially on the perimeter," Budke said. "They shoot the ball very well from the outside and have a lot of really good shooters. If they get hot, they can score points in a hurry. We have to use our athleticism and quickness to cause them trouble."
Boise State boasts three of the WAC's top four three-point percentage shooters in guards Jodi Nakashima (31-66, 47.0 percent), Cariann Ramirez (16-37, 43.2) and Lynette Grondin (12-28, 42.9). Inside sophomore forward Jamie Hawkins, the 2003 WAC Freshman of the Year, leads the Broncos, averaging 13.8 points and 5.1 rebounds per contest.
The Broncos four conference losses have all come at home and by eight points or less while Boise State is a perfect 2-0 in league play on the road with wins at Fresno State and Nevada.
Louisiana Tech has won five straight games since stumbling at Rice in early January. The Lady Techsters are a perfect 7-0 at home on the year and are averaging defeating their opponents in the Thomas Assembly Center by over 40 points a game, including last week's 88-62 win over SMU.
Five Tech players are averaging double figures as Trina Frierson (16.6 ppg), Amisha Carter (15.3), Erica Smith-Taylor (13.1), Amber Obaze (12.7) and Lakiste Barkus (10.1) form an almost unstoppable offensive threat.
Starting sophomore point guard Tasha Crain continues to be the defensive leader of the team, averaging 2.5 steals per game along with 4.1 points and 3.3 assists.
Tech leads the all-time series with Boise State 6-0 as all six wins have come over the last two seasons.
