HONOLULU- Timmy Chang threw four touchdown passes and became the NCAA career yardage record holder as he led Hawaii to a 34-23 victory over Louisiana Tech at Aloha Stadium late Saturday night.

Tech (4-5, 3-2 WAC) cut a 27-13 halftime deficit to 27-23 early in the fourth quarter but could get no closer as Chang led Hawaii (4-4. 4-3 WAC) on a fourth quarter scoring drive while the Rainbow Warrior defense made several big stops as well in the fourth quarter to preserve the Western Athletic Conference victory for the Rainbow Warriors.

Chang surpassed a 13-year old record that was previously held by BYU?s Ty Detmer. Change moved into the records books with a eight yard touchdown pass to Jason Rivers in the second quarter surpassing the 15,031 career yardage mark that Detmer held.

Tech running back Ryan Moats had another big night carrying the football 38 times for 228 and two touchdowns.


The Bulldogs opened scoring with a 2-yard touchdown by Moats on Tech?s first possession but Hawaii came right back to score 19 straight points on two Chang touchdown passes and a defensive touchdown to take a 19-7 lead midway through the second quarter. Moats then scored on a 15-yard scamper before Hawaii blocked the extra point to make the score 19-13. The Rainbow Warriors ended the scoring in the first half with 17-yard scoring strike from Chang to Gerald Welsh before Hawaii converted the two point conversion as the Rainbow Warriors took a 27-13 halftime lead.

Early in the third quarter, Louisiana Tech recovered a Chad Owens fumble on a punt and capitalized with an eight yard touchdown pass from Matt Kubik to Tramissian Davis to cut the Hawaii lead to 27-20. The Bulldogs then made it a 27-23 deficit with a 23-yard field goal by Daniel Horwedel on the first play of the fourth quarter.


Moats entered the Louisiana Tech record books again on Saturday as the junior set the Tech single season rushing record surpassing Jason Davis who set the mark with 1,351 yards in 1990.



The Bulldogs play their final home game of the season on Saturday night when Tech hosts Tulsa in Shreveport at Independence Stadium for a 6 p.m kickoff.
