Bulldogs Add 2004 Football Signees
Louisiana Tech head coach Jack Bicknell announced that the Bulldogs inked 29 recruits Wednesday to national letters of intent during national signing day.
Bicknell said he was pleased with the 2004 class, which includes 11 junior college transfers and 18 high school seniors.
?I think it is an excellent class,? Bicknell said. ?There were certain needs that we had, and I think we addressed those. Our coaches did a great job with the Mississippi Junior Colleges, and I think we signed some players who can help us immediately next year.?
Bicknell said on the offensive side of the football, he wanted one quarterback, one running back, a number of wide receivers and his usual load of offensive lineman, which is exactly what the Bulldogs signed.
Highlighting the offensive signees is G.W. Carver High School running back Freddie Franklin, who chose Tech over Nebraska. Franklin lettered for four years at Carver, earning all-district, all-metro and all-state honors as a senior while rushing for over 900 yards and recording over 900 yards receiving as well.
The 6-foot, 190-pound Franklin led Carver to the Class 8-5A championship this season and was also a member of last year?s Class 4A state championship basketball team.
?We feel like we got a great running back,? Bicknell said. ?He was our No. 1 choice and it came down to us and Nebraska. Anytime you can get the top guy you are after at a position that is a good sign.?
Tech also signed junior college quarterback Andre Daniels from Northeast Oklahoma Junior College. Daniels led his team to back-to-back conference titles and is rated as the 82nd best junior college product in the country by SuperPrep Magazine.
?He is a great athlete who can throw and run,? said Bicknell of Daniels, who passed for 1,423 yards and nine touchdowns and rushed for 215 yards and seven scores.
Tech inked a trio of wide receivers, including high school seniors Thomas Augusta from West St. John?s and Shane Womack from St. Helena Central as well as Hinds Community College?s Seneca Chambers. Bicknell hopes the trio will help with the loss of seniors DJ Curry, Shawn Piper and Chris Norwood.
?We signed some great wide receivers without question,? Bicknell said. ?Chris Norwood backed Seneca Chambers up at Hinds and we know how good Chris was for us. Obviously, we feel like he could be a great player for us. Augusta is extremely fast and Womack is a big, physical receiver.?
Tech also signed one tight end and six offensive lineman during the day.
On the defensive side of the football, Tech signed six defensive linemen, three linebackers and seven defensive backs/safeties.
?Defensively, we helped ourselves with some junior college guys which we felt we needed to do,? Bicknell said. ?We had a good year in the Mississippi Junior Colleges and that really helped this class.?
With the loss of linebackers Antonio Crow and Jonte Price to graduation, Bicknell said he is excited about the three junior college linebackers Tech signed in Barry Robertson from Pearl River Community College, Quincy Hicks from Pearl River and Bo Cox from Mississippi Delta.
?I feel like we have some good linebackers coming in to the program in this class,? Bicknell said. ?These are three guys who can help immediately next year and I?m excited to see what they can do.?
Two of the Bulldogs defensive signees were local products as Tech inked Airline High School free safety Tracy Russell and Captain Shreve defensive end Wes Day.
The final piece of the 2004 class is Oak Ridge High School kicker Danny Horwedel, who was recommended to the Tech coaches by a former Bulldog kicker.
?Danny was an interesting deal,? Bicknell said. ?Chris Boniol recommended him to us and said he felt like he was an outstanding kicker. He had been to Chris? camps. So we watched some film on him and feel like he was the best kickoff guy available. With kickers you never know; they are extremely difficult to evaluate, but we think Danny could be a good one.?
