Techsters Honored at Post-Season Banquet
RUSTON - Four Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters took home hardware after being honored Tuesday night at the annual Lady Techster Basketball Banquet held at the university Student Center.
Senior forward Amisha Carter received the MVP Award handed out by Tech head coach Kurt Budke after averaging 16.9 points and 10.8 rebounds a game for the Lady Techsters this year. The 2004 Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year and recent draftee of the New York Liberty of the WNBA also led the WAC with 17 double doubles and 27 double digit scoring performances.
Senior forward Trina Frierson earned the Offensive Player of the Year Award after averaging 16.2 points and 7.0 rebounds a game while shooting 51 percent from the field. The Vicksburg, Miss., native and recent selection of the WNBA's Seattle s Storm was one of only 20 finalists for the 2004 Naismith Player of the Year Award.
Senior guard Amber Obaze received a pair of honors, earning the Academic Award for her 3.47 grade point average while also taking home the Lady Techster Award, which goes to the player that best exemplifies what a Lady Techster should be like on and off the court. The Dallas, Texas, native averaged 11.6 points and 4.1 rebounds a contest for Tech this season while finishing her career ranked No. 5 all-time in minutes played with 3,798.
Junior guard Erica Smith-Taylor received the Defensive Player of the Year Award after leading the Lady Techsters with 101 steals. Smith-Taylor ranked No. 2 in the WAC and No. 20 in the country in steals per game at 3.2 while averaging 13.8 points and 6.3 rebounds a contest.
