Boxscore AUSTIN, Texas - It was a banner day for Louisiana Tech at the 77th Annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on Saturday as four school records were broken in the final day of competition.
School records were set in the women?s 400-meter hurdles, triple jump, 400-meter relay and 800- meter relay at Mike A. Meyers Stadium.
?It was a tremendous day for us,? Tech head track and field coach
Gary Stanley said. ?This is probably the best performance we have had as a team ever at the Texas Relays.?
Ayanna Alexander and Doria Appleberry both set school records in individual events while the women?s 400 and 800-meter relay also posted the top times in school history.
Appleberry ran her fastest time of the season with a 58.74 in the 400-meter hurdles to come in fifth place on Saturday. This is the third straight race that the junior set a school mark after posting the Tech record in the event in Thursday?s prelims and also last weekend at the LSU Tiger Relays. The time is also an NCAA qualifying mark.
Alexander was taking part in her first triple jump competition since competing at the NCAA Indoor Championships. She registered a mark of 42-11.75 which is an outdoor school record and an NCAA regional qualifying mark Alexander set the Tech indoor school mark at the WAC Indoor Championships where she won the WAC title in the triple jump.
The 400-meter relay team of Latoina Wilson, Crystlle Church, Appleberry and Shandra Freeman posted their top time of the season (44.59) to finish in fourth place behind LSU, Baylor and Miami. The time set a school mark and is also a regional qualifying performance.
?Our relays ran extremely well,? Stanley said. ?If you look at who we beat in the 400-meter relay, there are some heavy hitters behind us who are known for having great sprint squads.?
Tech bested TCU, Southern California and Houston in the 400-meter relay finals.
?Just making it to the finals in events at the Texas Relays is a big accomplishment, ? Stanley added. ?We had some solid finishes on Saturday coming in fourth in two of the relays and we are very happy about that achievement.?
The 800-meter relay of Appleberry, Nina Gilbert, Crystlle Church and Freeman also came in fourth and set a school record with a time of 44.59.
Brenda-Grace Hunt had a strong showing the women?s javelin throw. Hunt posted a throw of 165-10 (50.55 M) which was good enough for a fourth place finish at the event.
The mile relay came into the event with a national ranked of No. 5 but had a mishap in the finals and dropped the baton. The team finished with a time of 3:44.18 after the missed exchange to finish 8th.
Six performances were good enough to be regional qualifying marks on Saturday. Tech returns to action in two weeks at TCU.
