Track and Field Garners Multiple LSWA Honors
BATON ROUGE, La. ? The honors keep coming for the Louisiana Tech track and field team and that continued on Saturday as the season was capped when the Louisiana Sports Writers Association awarded Tech athletes with 19 all-Louisiana honors.
Tech had the second most all-state honors next to LSU with UL-Lafayette having the third most selections with nine.
Brenda-Grace Hunt (javelin), Troy Lewis (100, 200 meters), Stefan Malmquist (1,500 meters), David Phillips (800 meters), Carlos Arrizon (3,000 meter steeplechase) Doria Appleberry (400-meter hurdles) and Tawanna Williams (shot put) all had the top time or mark in the state in their respective events.
The top three times or marks in each event earned all-Louisiana honors.
Lewis and Arrizon both garnered all-Louisiana honors in a pair of individual events. Lewis posted the state?s top time in the 100 meters (10.37) and the second fastest time in the 200 meters (20.90). The Shreveport native competed a the NCAAA Championships in the 200 meters.
Arrizon had the state?s top time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:09.32) and the 3rd fastest time in the 5,000 meters (14:38.98).
The Bulldogs recorded the top times in the state in the 800 meters, 1,500 meters and the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Hunt had a mark of 168-7 in the javelin throw, the best in the state. The sophomore came in 10th at the NCAA Championships. Hunt will be competing in the Olympic trials for her home country of Jamaica in the near future.
Appleberry ran a 57.28 in the 400-meter hurdles as the junior posted the top time in Louisiana in that event. Applebery also earned all-Louisiana honors in the 400 and 1,600-meter relays for Tech. The Dallas native competed in the NCAA Championship in both relays and the 400-meter hurdles.
Phillips ran a time of 1:49.36 in the 800 meter at the Mid-East regional to earn an all-Louisiana honor to go along with his all-WAC award as well.
Malmquist ran the fastest 1,500 meters in Louisiana clocking a time of 3:49.17 to grab the LSWA honor.
Williams closed her Lady Techsters career with an all-state honor after a throw of 50-8.25 in the shot put, the best mark in the state this season.
In addition to the individual honors, the Lady Techsters 400 (44.36) and 1,600 meter relay (3:35.03) teams also earned all-Louisiana honors with the second fastest times in the state behind LSU. The Lady Tigers won NCAA titles in both events in early June. Both of Tech?s relay teams competed in the NCAA Championships and were one of eight schools to place both relays in the top 15 at the NCAA meet.
Doria Appleberry, Nina Gilbert, Latonia Wilson and Krstal Cole run on the mile relay, with Gilbert, Wilson and Cole all being freshman.
On the 400-meter relay, Shandra Freeman, Appleberry, Crystlle Chuch and Wilson run in that event.
Indoor all-American Ayanna Alexander posted the second longest triple jump mark in the state (43-1.75) to LSU?s Nicole Toney who had a wind-aided jump of 45-3.5 to earn all-American honors at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Alexander also competed at the NCAA meet in early June after winning the WAC indoor and outdoor triple jump title.
