RUSTON ? Boise State rode a ball-control rushing attack to down Louisiana Tech 30-13 Saturday afternoon before 16,281 fans at Joe Aillet Stadium.
After rushing for only 52 yards in a first half that saw the Broncos trailing 10-7 entering the locker room, Boise State took control midway through the third quarter, finishing the game with 260 yards on the ground.
The Broncos called rushing plays on 31 of their last 32 offensive snaps.
?Our biggest problem was we couldn?t stop the run in the second half,? said Tech head coach Jack Bicknell. ?They are the No. 1 rushing team (in the Western Athletic Conference) and they are good at it. I was concerned about that. They didn?t do much else (offensively), and I felt like we played pretty well defensively in the first half.?
It was Boise State?s one pass play in the final quarter and a half that put the Broncos in control of the game. Junior Broncos quarterback Jared Zabransky hit tight end Sherm Blaser on a 10-yard scoring strike with 6:44 to play, capping a 13-play, 64-yard drive and giving Boise State a 21-13 lead.
Boise State then made its biggest defensive play of the game. On the first play of Tech?s ensuing offensive possession, Mike Williams sacked Tech quarterback Matt Kubik in the endzone for a safety, giving Boise State a 23-13.
?The safety really took the winds out of our sails,? Bicknell said. ?We were only down eight points, one possession, and we had an opportunity to come down and score. They got the safety and obviously that really hurt.?
Boise State tacked on a late touchdown for the final score.
The Broncos jumped out to a 7-0 lead on a Zabransky to Brad Lau 9-yard touchdown pass with 11:28 remaining in the second quarter. After a Danny Horwedel 25-yard field goal cut the deficit to 7-3, Tech struck late in the half as Kubik hit Eric Newman on a 37-yard strike on a fourth-down and six play.
Tech took the lead and the momentum into the locker room. However, after a missed 48-yard field goal on the Bulldogs first possession of the third quarter, Boise State went on a six play drive covering 69 yards, capped by Lee Marks 16-yard run.
It was just beginning of the Broncos dominating ground attack.
?It was frustrating,? said Tech linebacker Barry Robertson. ?I feel like we should?ve beaten them. That?s what I?ve got in my mind. When you make mistakes against a good team, that?s what happens. That?s the game of football.?
Tech had only four offensive possessions in the second half, including the final two which resulted in a total of one offensive play.
Robertson led Tech with 14 tackles while senior Byron Santiago added 13.
