Tech Falls to Tulsa, 74-70
TULSA, Okla. - Becky Heidotten scored a career-high 26 points on senior day to lead Tulsa to a 74-70 win over Louisiana Tech at the Donald W. Reynolds Center Saturday afternoon.
Tech (18-8, 14-4 WAC) fell for the second straight game after an 83-69 loss to Rice Thursday night.
Although the Lady Techsters will still be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Western Athletic Conference Tournament, they could still have to share the regular season title if Rice defeats SMU tonight in Houston.
Trailing 73-67 with under one minute to play, Tech guard Tasha Crain hit a three-pointer to close the gap to 73-70. A good defensive possession ensued for Tech as the Techsters forced an off-balance shot by Robbins with 0:27 remaining but Robbins pulled down her own miss and Tech was forced to foul.
Pongonis hit one of two free throws with 13.8 remaining to seal the win for Tulsa.
The contest was a back and forth affair throughout. After Tulsa jumped out to a 19-5 lead in the first seven minutes of the contest, Louisiana Tech responded with an 11-0 run to cut the lead to three points.
An 8-0 run by Tech a few minutes later gave Tech its biggest advantage of the game at 28-24 with just over six minutes remaining in the opening half. Tulsa responded and entered the halftime locker room leading 40-38.
The final 20 minutes of play were tight as Tech took a 51-49 lead on a three-pointer by Aarica Ray-Boyd with 12:43 to play; however, guard Kara Pongonis hit a three-pointer on the next possession to ignite a 9-0 run by the Golden Hurricane.
Trailing 58-51, Tech used a 10-2 run to claim its final lead of the game at 61-60 with 7:04 remaining capped by a short jumper in the lane by Margaret DeCiman.
However, Tulsa responded. Tulsa forward Jillian Robbins stole the ball and went the length of the court for a lay-up with 1:17 remaining to give the Golden Hurricane a 73-67 lead, setting up the final flurry of action.
Crain led Tech with 23 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and three steals while Lakiste Barkus added 10 points.
Robbins added 21 points and 16 rebounds for Tulsa while Pongonis chipped in with 18 points.
