Boxscore
LAWRENCE, Kan. ? A tight, defensive slugfest turned into an offensive affair as Kansas took advantage of three Louisiana Tech second half turnovers to defeat the Bulldogs 34-14 Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.
The Bulldogs (0-2) kept Kansas (3-0) in check in the first half, holding the Jayhawks to just 73 yards of total offense, including just 13 rushing yards.
However, Kansas gained control of the game in the second half, intercepting three Louisiana Tech passes and setting up the Jayhawks with good field position.
The turnovers allowed Kansas to have four scoring drives of 30 yards or less and sunk the Bulldogs hopes for a victory.
The game began as a defensive matchup as both offenses combined for only 203 yards of total offense.
Kansas struck first when quarterback Brian Luke connected on a 14-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Charles Gordon in the first quarter to give the Jayhawks a 7-0 lead.
Tech responded in the second quarter with an 11-play, 78-yard drive that ended with a 3-yard pass from quarterback Matt Kubik to tight end Anthony Harrison, tying the game at 7-7 heading into halftime.
But that?s when things fell apart for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldog offense struggled early, as the Jayhawks held Tech to just 12 yards of offense in the third quarter.
Meanwhile, Kansas got its offense in motion, scoring on a 7-play, 63-yard drive, capped by a 4-yard pass from Luke to tight end Derek Fine to give the Jayhawks a 14-7 lead.
But the fourth quarter was when the Jayhawks capitalized on the Bulldog mistakes.
The Jawhawks? Theo Baines picked off a pass from Tech quarterback Donald Allen and returned the ball to the Tech 15-yard line.
Two plays later, Luke threw his third touchdown pass of the game with a 6-yard strike to wide receiver Brian Murph, extending the Kansas lead to 21-7.
Moments later, Kansas picked off another Tech pass, this one from Kubik and started their ensuing drive on the Tech 30-yard line.
Kansas running back Jon Cornish crashed into the end zone, two plays later on a 1-yard scoring run, moving the score to 28-7.
The Bulldogs made a late comeback when Kubik hit wide receiver Freddie King for a 15-yard touchdown strike to close the gap to 28-14 but it would be as close as the Bulldogs would get.
Kansas added two more fourth quarter field goals, one of them off another interception to put the game away.
Luke completed 19-of-31 passes for 236 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.
