Tech Defense Stymies San Jose State
Boxscore
RUSTON ? Louisiana Tech held San Jose State?s dynamic scoring duo of Lamisha Augustine and Amber Jackson in check as the Lady Techsters downed the Spartans 74-51 before 3,412 fans at the Thomas Assembly Center Thursday night.
Tech?s man to man helping defense held Augustine to only 2-of-13 from the field and a season-low eight points in 29 minutes before the senior forward fouled out of the game midway through the second half.
Jackson, who ended the night with a team-high 17 points and 10 rebounds, scored 10 of her points in the final seven minutes of play after Tech (13-4, 5-1 WAC) had built a 28-point advantage and Lady Techster head coach Chris Long had emptied his bench.
?I just thought defensively we played so well,? Long said. ?All five of our players on the floor were focused on the defensive game plan and aware of what needed to be done to be successful. Jackson and Augustine are great players and we were able to frustrate them.?
Tech held the Spartans (9-7, 4-1 WAC) to only 31 percent (19-61) shooting for the game, including only a paltry 6-of-26 in the first half when the Lady Techsters built a 37-21 halftime lead.
Offensively, Tech junior guard Shan Moore scored a career-high 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds in 33 minutes of action hitting 8-of-18 field goals and 4-of-4 free throws. The Minden, La., product scored 13 points in the first half to help her team build an early 13-1 lead.
San Jose State used an 11-0 run to close to within 15-14 midway through the first half before Tech answered with an 18-3 run that stretched the lead back to 16 at the half.
?Shan is playing with a lot of confidence right now,? Long said. ?When she does that she is a very, very good player. The thing I was so pleased with was she took the challenge of defending Augustine and not only handled that but also contributed so much on the offensive end.?
Ty Moore added 17 points, nine rebounds and three steals while Eboni Mangum chipped in with 13 points and seven rebounds in her first career start.
For the game, Tech outrebounded San Jose State 54-39, including pulling down 23 offensive boards.
With the win, Tech sets up a Saturday night showdown against first place Fresno State at the Thomas Assembly Center at 7 p.m.
