Tech Women Repeat as WAC Champions

BOISE, Idaho -- The Louisiana Tech Indoor track and field team will bring home its second consecutive WAC championship for the women after finishing with a total of 131 points in the events, which was 41 points ahead of second place Idaho.

"I'm really proud of the kids and coaches," head coach Gary Stanley said. "This really speaks a lot for our program. The kids did a great job, and I give them and (coaches) Shawn Jackson and Larry Carmichael all the credit in the world."

After a solid day on Friday, Tech's women's squad really came through Saturday by gathering a total of 101 points on the last day alone.

?There was a tremendous amount of energy,? Stanley said. ?The kids were really pulling for each other and created a great atmosphere.?

The women's 4x400 relay team of juniors Latonia Wilson, Nina Gilbert, Miriam Barnes and Krystal Cole set a new conference record with a time of three minutes, 39.39 seconds to help clinch the championship for the second year in a row.

?It was actually the highest combing point finish for both programs competing,? Stanley said. ?We were dominant in the sprints in both genders.?

The Techsters were also helped after dominating the women's 200 meter dash finals with four finishes in the top six for a total of 27 points in that event by itself and four finishes in the top five of the 60M finals for 28 points.

The Bulldogs were able to put together a close third place finish with a total of 104 points to Cal State Northridge's 106. Boise State was able to win the 2006 Indoor Championship with a total of 154 points for the men.

?The guys have the hunger,? Stanley said. ?They can see they?re getting close to a championship.?

Junior Johnathan Holland finished first in the 60M for the men with a time of 6.73, while senior Nolan Jackson delivered a first place finish with a time of 7.83 in the 60M-hurdles for an NCAA provisional mark.

Back on Friday, Louisiana Tech established itself in the hopes of repeating with great times and marks.

Finishing first in the men?s 60 meter hurdles was Jackson for the Bulldogs with a time of 7.88 seconds to qualify for the finals and also earning an NCAA provisional mark.

Freshman distance runner Wesley Wilson also qualified for the finals in the men?s one mile run with a time of four minutes, 22.04 seconds to be run on Saturday.

Junior Jamaal London?s time of 48.83 second in the men?s 400M also qualified him for the finals, while juniors Gilbert, Sophia Jackson and Cole along with El Charrita Reynolds all dominated the women?s 400M in the preliminaries. Gilbert was able to finish with a time of 54.63 seconds, while Jackson and Cole finished at 57.32 and 57.41 seconds, respectively. Reynolds also posted a good mark with 57.53.

Tech?s squad also dominated the preliminaries of the women?s 60M with juniors Wilson and Lasadies McClain along with senior Spivey and sophomore Whitney Hobbs each qualifying for the finals. Wilson finished first with a time of 7.46 seconds, while Spivey finished at 7.47. Hobbs would finish with a mark of 7.67 while McClain came in at 7.69.

Holland burst through the men?s 60M with the conference?s best time at 6.83 seconds in the championships to qualify for the finals. Holland also qualified for the finals of the men?s 200M along with sophomore Kevin Johnson with times of 21.65 and 21.74.

Both juniors Sheldon Williams and Will Wade qualified for the finals in the men?s 800M with times of 1:57.06 and 1:57.30 minutes, respectively, while junior Miriam Barnes qualified for the women?s 800M with a time of 2:16.15.
