Techsters Don?t Want to Share WAC Crown
RUSTON ? Three seniors will be playing their final game at the Thomas Assembly Center Saturday when 18th ranked Louisiana Tech hosts Hawaii in a huge Western Athletic Conference contest at 7 p.m.
Seniors Tasha Williams, Aarica Ray-Boyd and Margaret DeCiman will lead Louisiana Tech (22-4, 14-1 WAC) into a game that has plenty at stake.
A win by the Techsters would clinch the outright 2006 Western Athletic Conference title and the No. 1 seed in the upcoming league tournament next week as well as put the program one step closer to its 25th straight NCAA Tournament.
A loss ? Louisiana Tech has won 110 straight regular season home games dating back to 1992 ? and a Fresno State win over Nevada Saturday night would open the door for the Bulldogs to share the WAC title and would also give the Bulldogs the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament.
?A win would give us the outright title, and we wouldn?t have to share it,? said Techster head coach Chris Long. ?It also gives us the No. 1 seed going into the WAC Tournament. It?s a special night also because of our three seniors. Senior Night is always a great night but an emotional one, and I want these three seniors to go out on a good note in their last home game.?
Hawaii (18-8, 9-6 WAC), who has the inside track for the No. 3 seed in the WAC Tournament, has won five straight and seven of its last eight games, including Thursday night?s 74-71 overtime win at New Mexico State.
The Rainbow Wahine boasts three of the WAC?s top 15 scorers in guard Amy Sanders (No. 8 at 13.1 ppg), guard Janevia Taylor (No. 12 at 12.6 ppg) and center Brittany Grice (No. 13 at 11.8 ppg). Hawaii is also one of the top rebounding teams in the WAC, something Long said he is concerned about.
?Hawaii is a good basketball team,? Long said. ?You don?t win 18 games if your not. Hawaii is big, strong and solid at every position. We will have to play well at both ends of the floor to win. Rebounding is a key for this game. We have improved tremendously in rebounding as the year has gone on, and we have to do a good job against Hawaii.?
Tech, which has won 11 straight games and 17 of its last 18, defeated Hawaii 71-66 in overtime in the first meeting of the season between the two teams back on Jan. 12 in Honolulu. In that game Tasha Williams scored 18 points before fouling out with three minutes remaining in overtime as Tech held on for the win.
Tech leads the all-time series against Hawaii 15-1.
The contest can be heard on KXKZ-FM 107.5 and via the Internet at www.z1075fm.com with the pre-game show starting at 6:30 p.m.
