Explosive Third Quarter Gives Tech the Win
LOGAN, Utah -- Daniel Porter and Patrick Jackson each rushed for more than 100 yards and two scores to lead Louisiana Tech (3-5, 2-3 WAC) to a 31-21 win over Utah State (0-8, 0-4) Saturday.
Tech set season records on both sides of the ball in the third quarter Saturday in the win, outgaining the Aggies 235-2 in the decisive third stanza that saw the Bulldogs push a slim 10-7 halftime lead to 24-7.
The Bulldogs tallied 288 total yards on the ground, most coming in the second half.
?Running the ball is the key to our success on offense,? Tech head coach Derek Dooley said. ?We don?t do well when we don?t run the ball well. We went in knowing we had to run the ball well in order to be successful against this team, and we did that today.?
After leading 10-7 in the first half, the Bulldogs set the tone for the second half with a 9-play, 78-yard drive finished off by a 9-yard touchdown run by sophomore Patrick Jackson. It was Jackson?s third multiple rushing-touchdown game of the season and gave Tech a 17-7 lead with 11:57 in the quarter. Tech extended its third-quarter lead on a 14-yard touchdown run by sophomore Daniel Porter with 8:34 on the clock for a 24-7 score off a five-play, 67-yard drive.
Tech struck first with a career-long field goal of 47 yards from senior Danny Horwedel with 8:30 in the first quarter gave Tech a 3-0 lead. The Bulldogs drove again on their next drive to the end zone which was capped off by a 3-yard touchdown run from junior Patrick Jackson which would lead to a 10-0 score. Tech out-gained the Aggies 125 yards to 43 in the first quarter alone.
The second quarter was a different matter for the Tech offense. Whereas the Bulldogs controlled the game in the first quarter, the Aggies out-gained Tech 149-to-43 in yards. Utah State finally put points on the board with an 82-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Leon Jackson to freshman fullback Jacob Atkinson at the 8:56 mark in the second quarter to cut the Bulldog lead to 10-7.
?I was very disappointed with the second quarter,? Dooley said. ?We had a lot of negative plays with penalties, missed assignments and negative yardage plays. We overcame it in the second half.?
A blocked field goal by freshman Dominic Faust with :08 on the clock in the first half kept the Bulldogs ahead as Tech took a 10-7 lead into halftime. It was Faust?s third blocked field goal of the season.
?It was a good play because it kept us in the lead before halftime,? Dooley said. ?But it all depends on what you do in the third quarter.?
Porter sealed the game adding another rushing touchdown for the Bulldogs with 3:53 to go in the game to give Tech a 31-14 lead. Utah State had added its second touchdown of the game with 7:32 left to go in the fourth quarter on a 2-yard touchdown run by Curtis Marsh. The Aggies would score again with 2:17 left to play on a 19-yard touchdown reception by senior Kevin Robinson.
Porter would lead Tech rushers with 129 yards and two touchdowns. Jackson also had two scores and carried the ball for 101 yards on the ground. Champion was 23-of-29 for 230 yards.
The Bulldogs will return to action Saturday, Nov. 3, at Idaho.
