Five Bulldogs Earn All-Louisiana Honors

RUSTON, La. ? The Louisiana Sports Writers Association has released its All-Louisiana Football team and five Louisiana Tech Bulldogs have been recognized. Tech placed three players on the second team and two earned honorable mention.

All three of Tech?s players named to the second team represent the much improved defense from 2007. Defensive end Chris Pugh, linebacker Quin Harris and safety Antonio Baker were all named to the second team. After leading the Bulldogs with 12.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks, Pugh earned another second team honor. He was also named second team All-WAC. Linebacker Quin Harris led the WAC in passes defended and finished 10th in total tackles in the conference to back up his All-WAC second team selection with All-Louisiana as well. Baker led the Bulldogs with 116 and finished fifth in the conference. Baker had double-digit tackles in eight games and all three of his interceptions came in conference play.

Punter Chris Keagle and punt returner Philip Beck was both given honorable mention by the LSWA. Keagle led the WAC in punting average and net punting. More than one-third of his punts were downed inside the opponent?s 20-yard line, and opponents averaged just 7.5 yards a return on his punts. His 37.0 net punting average is 25th in the nation. Beck proved to be one of the most dangerous returners in the WAC. Although he did not break a punt return for a touchdown, Beck?s average of 17.4 yards was second in the WAC and No. 5 in the nation.

LSU?s Glenn Dorsey was named defensive player of the year, and Tulane?s Matt Forte was offensive player of the year. LSU coach Les Miles was named coach of the year in a tight vote with UL-Monroe?s Charlie Weatherbie. Chad Jones from LSU earned freshman of the year honors, and LaDarius Webb from Nicholls State was selected as newcomer of the year.
