Tech?s Moore Named WAC Player of the Year
RUSTON ? Louisiana Tech senior guard Shan Moore was named the 2007 Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year Sunday in a vote by the league coaches while senior forward Ty Moore joined her cousin on the all-WAC first team.
Senior guard Amber Metoyer and Ty Moore were voted to the WAC all-Defensive team while freshman forward Shanavia Dowdell was named to the league?s all-Freshman squad.
Shan Moore earned the honor ? the fifth WAC Player of the Year honor by a Lady Techster player in six seasons ? after leading Louisiana Tech to a share of the WAC regular season title.
?It?s a great honor for her,? said Tech head coach Chris Long. ?Since conference play began, she has played her best basketball of the season. It?s a great honor because the coaches of the other teams in this league feel like she is the toughest match-up in the WAC.?
The Minden, La., native averaged 15.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, 1.9 steals and 1.5 assists per game during 16 league games while shooting 41 percent from the field, a league-leading 41 percent from the three-point line and 71 percent from the free throw line.
Moore averaged almost 20 points a game during the last eight games of the season, highlighted by a 27-point performance in Tech?s 79-63 win over co-WAC champion Boise State.
After earning second team all-WAC honors last year, Ty Moore earned first team honors this year as well as all-defensive team honors after averaging 12.1 points, 9.5 rebounds, 1.1 blocks and 1.0 steals per game in league contests. The Shreveport, La., native recorded nine double doubles in 16 WAC games while shooting 49 percent from the field and 63 percent from the free throw line.
?Ty is very deserving of being on the first team,? Long said. ?She has been our most consistent player all season and almost averaged a double double despite playing far fewer minutes than some of the other players in this league.?
Metoyer was one of five players named to the all-defensive team after earning the reputation as arguably the league?s top perimeter defender. The Boulder, Colorado, native averaged 5.9 points, 8.1 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 3.2 assists per contest in WAC play while guarding the opponents top offensive perimeter player on a nightly basis.
?Amber has become a lock-down defender,? Long said. ?She is our best perimeter defender and maybe the best perimeter defender in this league.?
Dowdell earned all-freshman team honors despite averaging only 10.1 minutes per contest. The Calera, Ala., native 4.6 points and 2.9 rebounds a game in league games while shooting 55 percent from the field and 77 percent from the free throw line.
?I?m very happy to see Shanavia made the all-freshman team,? Long said. ?She is going to have quite a career at Louisiana Tech. She led the team in field goal percentage and with more minutes would have put up some big numbers. She will have that opportunity starting next year.?
