Ford Named WNBA All-Star MVP
RUSTON ? The honors just keep accumulating for former Louisiana Tech star and current Detroit Shock forward Cheryl Ford.
The two-time WNBA champion added to her trophy case Sunday when she brought home some hardware for the WNBA All-Star game earning MVP honors after leading the East to a 103-99 win over the West.
Ford scored 16 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and dished out five assists while also making her first career three-pointer of her professional career.
?I think I?m still in shock,? Ford said about raising the MVP trophy over her head. ?It?s a great award; it?s a great achievement for me and for the Detroit Shock organization. It?s a great feeling. I guess I just had the hot hand today and coach kept giving me the ball.?
Shock coach Bill Laimbeer, who also served as the head coach for the East team, told Ford prior to the game that he planned to only play her around 12 minutes due to a bone bruise on her knee that has kept Ford out of six games this year.
However, Ford was hot early and Laimbeer decided to take advantage of his star forward?s momentum, playing her 27 minutes.
?Cheryl plays that way every game,? he said. ?She?s always double-digit rebounding, she?s becoming a better offensive player every game, every season. Nobody really expected her to jack up a 3-pointer and make it, but it was her day. It?s great for her because she?s such a great person.?
