FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. -- The All Sports Association announced today that Louisiana Tech senior linebacker Quin Harris would be a nominee for the 2008 Wuerffel Trophy.
The nominations received represented over 50 universities in the NCAA's Football Bowl Subdivision.
"This is an absolutely tremendous nomination class", commented All Sports Association President Mike Coupe'. "We have multiple nominations from every conference (in NCAA Bowl Football Subdivision) that include 7 of this year's 15 Draddy Trophy Finalists as well. We at the All Sports Association are extremely proud of all of these young men."
Named after former Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel, the Wuerffel Trophy is presented annually to the Football Bowl Subdivision player that best combines exemplary community service, with academic and athletic achievement.
The 2008 Wuerffel Trophy finalists will be announced on November 12, 2008 and distributed to the award's National Selection Committee for voting. Formal announcement of the winner will occur on Tuesday, December 9, 2008. Presentation of the 2008 Wuerffel Trophy will be at the All Sports Association's 40th Annual Awards Dinner on February 20, 2009, in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.
Harris was selected due to his hard work and efforts on and off the playing field. His accomplishments on the field include; registering 270 tackles in his Tech career, earning Second Team All-WAC honors in 2007, Louisiana Sports Writers Association All-Louisiana Team in 2006 and 2007 and Rivals.com All-WAC Team in 2007.
In addition to excelling on the field, Harris has played a large role in helping out the Ruston community amassing over 50 hours of community service throughout college which includes; Habitat for Humanity, St. Jude Radioathon, Northeast Louisiana Food Drive, Lift for Learning, Louisiana Tech Halloween Carnival, reading to kids at A.E. Phillips Elementary in Ruston and the A.E. Phillips Elementary Spring Carnival.
Harris accomplished all of this while maintaining a 3.8 grade point average throughout college. He graduated in the spring of 2008 and is now pursuing a master's degree in Exercise Physiology and Sports Performance.
