RUSTON -- Shanavia Dowdell scored 20 points and Adrienne Johnson added 18 points and 13 rebounds to lead Louisiana Tech to an 82-59 win over Sam Houston State Saturday night at the Thomas Assembly Center.

Dowdell scored 13 of her points in the opening half as the Lady Techsters (5-4) opened up a 17-point lead with five minutes to play before the Bearkats (1-8) fought back to trim the advantage to 41-31 at the break.

"We had trouble defending them," said Tech head coach Chris Long. "Sam Houston played really hard. We had it out to 17 late in the first half and then we let them cut it to 10 instead of pushing it out to 25 or so. Now they are excited going into the locker room and you have a ball game coming out into the second half."

Sam Houston State hung close early in the second half as a pair of free throws by Bre Agnew at the 13:07 mark pulled the Bearkats to within 55-43.

However, Tech used a 23-5 run over the next 10 minutes to pull away for its third straight victory on the year.

Despite shooting 45 percent from the field, Long said his team struggled attacking the Bearkats defense throughout the night.

"On film, we saw them play 80 percent sagging man and just a little zone," Long said. "Tonight, they played 39 minutes of zone. I didn't think we attacked it well at times. We shot a high percentage and scored 82 points, but we missed a lot of opportunities. It was good for us though because we are going to have to get better and execute better against zones."

Defensively, Tech held Sam Houston State to only 28 percent (18-65) shooting on the night, including only 3-of-20 from the three-point line. However, the Bearkats were successful getting to the free throw line all night where they hit 20-of-32.

"I thought we struggled defending their dribble penetration at times," Long said. "We simply put them at the free throw line too many times and we didn't get their enough ourselves."

Johnson hit 8-of-17 field goals and added three steals in 32 minutes of action for Tech.

"We knew they were going to sag so we worked on attacking the middle of the zone and posting hard," Johnson said. "They made us work. In the beginning we came out slow and got a lot of offensive rebounds but we did better boxing out in the second half."

In addition to Dowdell and Johnson's big nights, Whitney Jones added 15 points and five rebounds while Sidney Stewart added 10 points and a career-high seven rebounds.

Leasa Ailshie and Agnew led Sam Houston State with 10 points each.

Tech returns to action Monday night when it faces LSU in Baton Rouge at 7 p.m. in a game that will be televised on Cox Sports Television.
