Lady Techster Schedule
RUSTON - Louisiana Tech officially released its 2009-10 women's basketball schedule Monday as the defending Western Athletic Conference champions boast a slate that includes 14 home games, including marquee matchups against LSU, Mississippi State and Memphis.
The schedule also includes three televised games, including the Dec. 5 game at Baylor which will be televised on Fox Sports Southwest. Tech's road WAC games at Nevada Jan. 26 and at Idaho March 3 will also be televised on ESPNU.
Head coach Teresa Weatherspoon returns the nucleus of last year's conference championship team, including reigning WAC Player of the Year Shanavia Dowdell and first team all-conference honoree Adrienne Johnson.
Weatherspoon and Co. will open the season Nov. 13 at home against in-state foe Centenary. The Lady Techsters schedule also includes one four-game stretch in early December in which the team faces LSU, Baylor, Western Kentucky and Mississippi State.
"This is an extremely challenging schedule with great home games against LSU, Mississippi State and Memphis and tough road games at Baylor, Western Kentucky and Southern Miss just to name a few," Weatherspoon said. "It includes some big-time teams. The way we play against these types of teams says a lot about where our program is headed.
"We scheduled these teams as a measuring stick for us. I wouldn't have made a schedule like this if I didn't believe in our players. I believe they are hungry and ready to create their own legacy at Louisiana Tech."
Tech's non-conference home slate features games against Centenary, Alcorn State (Nov. 28), LSU (Dec. 1), Mississippi State (Dec. 12), McNeese State (Dec. 16) and Memphis (Dec. 22). The Lady Techsters will also play eight WAC home games, including match-ups against league rivals Boise State (Feb. 3) and Fresno State (Feb. 24).
The road portion of the schedule includes non-conference contests at Nicholls State (Nov. 20), Arkansas State (Nov. 24), Baylor (Dec. 5), Western Kentucky (Dec. 9) and Southern Miss (Jan. 3). The Lady Techsters will also play in the UTSA New Year's Classic with games against Stephen F. Austin (Dec. 29) and Texas-San Antonio (Dec. 30).
Tech's game against the Baylor Bears in Waco will be televised live on Fox Sports Southwest.
The Lady Techsters will play one exhibition game on Nov. 1 against Incarnate Word, which is coached by former LA Tech letter winner and Weatherspoon teammate Angela Lawson.
The 2010 Western Athletic Conference Tournament will be held March 9-13 at the Lawlor Events Center in Reno, Nevada.
