BOISE, Idaho -- Jessica Kirby, Summer Young and Kylie Bassett each homered to lead Louisiana Tech to a 7-2 win over Boise State in the second game of a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader at Mountain Cove Softball Filed Saturday afternoon.
Kirby registered two home runs as Tech belted a total of four in the win against a Broncos' pitching staff that had allowed only 12 through the first 29 games of the season.
Sophomore Meghan Krieg (10-3) was the beneficiary of the run support, earning the win while allowing two earned runs on three hits and five walks while striking out six in the complete-game performance.
Kirby gave Tech a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the top of the second inning. She then added to the Lady Techster lead with a two-run home run in the top of the third inning, scoring Kylie Bassett who singled with one out.
"Kirby is really doing a nice job the last few games with her approach at the plate," Dawson said. "She is being selective and hitting her pitch. She is dictating the count and is shows."
Boise State (17-13, 3-2 WAC) plated its first run of the game in the bottom of the third frame on a two-out infield single by Kelly Caplan. The Broncos threatened to score more but Krieg struck Lexi Straton out with the bases loaded to end the inning.
Leading 3-1, Summer Young led the top of the fourth inning off with a line drive home run over the left field wall.
One out later, Emma Barnes doubled and then scored on a single by Danielle Sheridan to left field and a fielding error by the Broncos' outfielder.
Tech maintained its 5-1 lead until the top of the seventh inning when Amberly Waits singled and then scored on a two-run home run by Bassett, who finished the game 4-for-4 at the plate.
Boise State added a single run in the bottom of the seventh inning on a solo home run by Kathy Cox before Krieg retired the next two batters to end the game.
In addition to Bassett's four-hit day, Kirby added two hits and three RBI while Waits also recorded two hits. Tech totaled 13 hits in the victory.
"Kylie has been just missing recently," Dawson said. "She has been robbed a couple of times in last few games and we told her to just keep plugging away. She relaxed today and didn't press and the results came in a big way for her."
The two teams will complete the three-game series Sunday with a single game starting at 2 p.m. CST.
