LOGAN -- Louisiana Tech hit three home runs and Meghan Krieg picked up her 13th win of the season as the Lady Techsters defeated Utah State 8-1 in the first game of a Western Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Friday at Johnson Field.
Tech (24-18, 6-6 WAC) scored in all but one inning totaling a total of nine hits and six walks off Aggies starter Lindsey Benson.
The Lady Techsters plated two runs in the top of the first as back-to-back doubles by Amberly Waits and Kylie Bassett gave Tech the early advantage.
Danielle Sheridan gave Tech a 3-0 lead with an RBI double in the top of the second inning, scoring Emma Barnes all the way from first base.
Jessica Kirby then hit her ninth home run of the season in the top of the third inning, a two-run shot over the left field fence as the Lady Techsters upped their lead to 5-0.
Utah State (8-29, 1-9) scored an unearned run in the bottom of the third inning and threatened to cut even further into the Tech lead but Krieg induced a ground ball out with the bases loaded to end the frame.
It didn't take long to get the run back as Waits hit her school record 12th home run of the season over the right centerfield fence in the top of the fourth inning as LA Tech led 6-1.
A Waits RBI single in the sixth and a Claire Gibson solo home run in the seventh -- the first of her career -- ended the scoring as Tech won 8-1.
Waits led Tech with three hits and three RBI while Bassett added two hits and one RBI.
Krieg (13-4) earned the win, allowing only one unearned run on four hits and five walks while striking out five in the complete-game performance.
Benson (1-18) took the loss, allowing eight earned runs on nine hits and six walks while striking out five.
