HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Louisiana Tech will look to extend its season-long four game winning streak Sunday when the Lady Techsters face Southern Mississippi at 2 p.m. at Reed Green Coliseum.
Head coach Teresa Weatherspoon's team has reeled off four straight wins since a 72-68 loss to Mississippi State on Dec. 12, including capturing the championship title in the 2009 UTSA New Year's Classic this week with victories over Stephen F. Austin and Texas-San Antonio.
The Lady Techsters (8-3) close out their non-conference slate against the Golden Eagles (4-8) as LA Tech opens Western Athletic Conference action Wednesday night at home against Utah State.
Tech continues to ranks among the nation's top offensive teams, averaging 77.1 points per contest and shooting almost 47 percent from the field.
Senior Shanavia Dowdell has scored in double figures in 10 straight games, including a career-high 30 points and 18 rebounds in an 82-72 win over UTSA Wednesday night. Dowdell is averaging 16.9 points and 10.9 rebounds a contest and shooting 56 percent from the field.
Teammates Adrienne Johnson (17.5 ppg, 6.9 rpg) and Whitney Jones (12.0 ppg) are also scoring in double figures while junior guards Tarkeisha Wysinger (9.1 ppg, 4.4 rpg) and Brietta Thomas (6.8 ppg, 2.5 rpg) are providing solid contributions off the bench.
Southern Miss (4-8) has lost its last four games that included an 87-61 loss at Alabama.
Seniors Pauline Love and Candace Rucker scored 24 and 20 points, respectively. Love collected her seventh double-double after grabbing 10 rebounds.
Love continues to lead the team in scoring and rebounding with 15.9 points and 12.4 rebounds per game and Washington is averaging 11.0 points per outing.
As a team, Southern Miss is averaging 62.8 points and 39.2 rebounds per game while shooting 40.5 percent from the field and 67.6 percent from the line.
The Lady Techsters lead the all-time series against USM 2-1, although the Golden Eagles won the last meeting 67-62 in Ruston during the 2007-08 season.
