| Coach Dykes' Letter to Louisiana Tech Students
RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech (2-4, 1-1 WAC) looks for its second consecutive win Saturday as the Bulldogs host Idaho (3-2, 0-0 WAC) at 3 p.m. in Tech's Homecoming game. Louisiana Tech will be looking for consecutive wins over FBS teams for the first time since the 2008 season while Idaho is opening WAC play.
Honorary Captains
Louisiana Tech will have two honorary captains for this weekend's Homecoming game against Idaho: Trace Adkins and Kix Brooks. Adkins will also be singing the national anthem prior to the game. Both are former Louisiana Tech students and Adkins was on the Bulldog football team.
Last Time Out
Lennon Creer rushed for a career-high 120 yards and two touchdowns and the Louisiana Tech defense dominated for four quarters to lead the Bulldogs to a 24-6 win over Utah State Saturday afternoon before 16,073 fans at Joe Aillet Stadium.
While Creer was spearheading a Bulldog rushing attack that totaled 278 yards on the ground, the LA Tech defense stifled quarterback Diondre Borel and the Aggies offense holding Utah State to only 195 total yards and a pair of Peter Caldwell field goals. The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Bulldogs, who improved to 2-4 on the year (1-1 WAC).
Homecoming Success
Hosting Idaho in its annual Homecoming game, Louisiana Tech is looking to continue a history of success on Homecoming and extend a current three-year winning streak. All-time, Louisiana Tech is 59-20-2 in Homecoming games and the Bulldogs have won their last three Homecoming match-ups. The last time LA Tech lost its Homecoming game was in 2006 when Idaho recorded a 24-14 win, Tech's only loss at home to Idaho. Since 2000, Tech is 7-3 in its Homecoming game.
Tech to Face Another Top-10 Passing Offense
When Louisiana Tech hosts Idaho on saturday, it will mark the second time this season that Louisiana Tech will face a passing offense ranked in the top 10 in the nation. The Vandals enter the game ranked sixth in the nation in passing, averaging 315.4 passing yards per game. Two weeks ago Louisiana Tech faced Hawai'i which then has the nation's No. 1 ranked passing offense as the Warriors are averaging 421.67 passing yards per game.
There are currently four teams on Louisiana Tech's schedule that are ranked in the top 25 in the nation in passing offense, including Idaho and Hawai'i. Tech has already faced Texas A&M (ranked No. 11, averaging 302.20 yards per game) and will place at Boise State on Oct. 26 (ranked No. 14, averaging 296.80 yards per game).
Setting the Stage for a Lot of Sacks
Saturday's game against Idaho could be ripe with a lot of hitting on the quarterback as Idaho enters the game ranked fourth in the nation in sacks, averaging 3.4 sacks per game. However the Vandals are last among all Division I FBS teams in sacks allowed, with 4.20 sacks per game allowed. That last stat could have Tech's defensive linemen drooling, especially junior Matt Broha who entered Tech's all-time career sacks charts last week with his 11th career sack.
Limiting Plays Key to Defensive Success
In the postgame press conference following Tech's 24-6 win over Utah State, Adrien Cole may have been joking when he said that liming Utah State to one explosive play compared to Hawai'i's 11 was the difference between a 200 yard offensive performance and a 600 yard offensive performance, but he was actually right on the money in that statement. Hawai'i had 21 big plays that accounted for 439 yards on Oct. 2 while on Oct. 9, Tech allowed Utah State 452 yards fewer than Hawai'i.
Second Half Scoring Woes Coming to an End?
Entering last weekend's game at Hawai'i, Louisiana Tech had been outscored in the second half, 64-25. In Tech's last three games the Bulldogs have began producing late in the game, scoring 30 points in the second half while only scoring nine points in the second half of the first three games of the year.
Getting Off on The Wrong Foot in the Second Half
When Louisiana Tech hosts Idaho Saturday, the Bulldogs will be looking to turn Lady Luck into their favor in the second half. Having already faced six opponents this season, all six have scored on their opening possession of the second half against Louisiana Tech. All of Tech's opponents have scored a touchdown to start the second half, except for Grambling (Sept. 4) and Utah State (Oct. 9), which scored field goals.
