RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech head coach Sonny Dykes announced Wednesday that seven players have been chosen as team captains for the spring 2011 practice season.
Matt Broha, Jay Dudley, Ray Holley, Taulib Ikharo, Matt Nelson, Stephen Warner and Ryan Williams were named spring captains less than a month from the start of spring practice. The Bulldogs get to work on March 10 with the first practice. The T-Day Spring Game is set for Saturday, April 2 at 2 p.m. at Joe Aillet Stadium.
"It is a testament to the character of these guys that three are junior college transfers," Dykes said of the captains. "This is a group of guys that have stood out to the team and to the coaches in terms of showing leadership and setting the right example. I am looking forward to them putting that into practice once we hit the field as a team on March 10."
Holley, Ikharo and Williams all joined the program last year as junior college transfers while Broha, Dudley and Nelson were offered scholarships out of high school. Warner, the team's center, was a walk-on out of high school but has earned a scholarship and has started the last 16 games for the Bulldogs while maintaining a GPA above 3.0 as an engineering major.
Louisiana Tech will open the 2011 season on Sept. 3 at Southern Miss in Hattiesburg and is looking to become bowl eligible in Dykes' second year at the helm of the program. The Bulldogs dropped a 13-12 decision to Southern Miss at home in 2010.
