Quotes from Second Spring Scrimmage

March 26, 2011

Louisiana Tech head coach Sonny Dykes

"Overall I think it was a good day. Our second offense has been hit or miss. We haven't played as a unit as well as we need to. Overall, I definitely think we are improving as a group."

On the defensive backs:

"I think our secondary is still a work in progress. We made some interceptions today and I feel like we are playing the ball better today than we were. We dropped a ton of interceptions last year and we have to expect to make the plays. We are doing a better job of that with four interceptions today but, like anything else, it is good for the defensive backs but bad for the quarterbacks."

On what newcomer stood out:

"I thought Chip Hester really stood out defensively. He made some plays and he was very explosive. He ran around, made some key tackles and plays physical. I think he still doesn't quite know what to do yet but he is learning quickly."

On naming a starter at quarterback at the end of spring practice:

"I think we will. I think it is pretty obvious to everyone that Colby is the starting quarterback right now. The battle right now is for the second spot and both of those guys (Taylor Burch and Zach Griffith) alternate. Some days Taylor is good and on other days Zach is good. We need them to be more consistent."

On the running backs:

"They both have been good this spring. Last scrimmage I think Ray Holley stood out but today we had some dead legs. They were not as explosive as they have been but we practice yesterday and really got after it."

On receivers:

"We would like to have receivers that could play 70-80 percent of the game. When you do that, then you have good ones. When you rotate a lot of guys, it shows you have depth but you don't have anyone that really stands out. To me, Quinton Patton did some good things today. He is real explosive with the ball in his hands after the catch. Richie Casey made more plays today than he has made in previous scrimmages. Myles White hasn't been as sharp because he has hit a wall. That is one thing the junior college players have to learn is to up their level of conditioning."
