Techsters Sweep Doubleheader from Southern

BATON ROUGE -- Louisiana Tech saw plenty of offensive firepower Saturday in sweeping a doubleheader from Southern by the scores of 13-4 and 11-6 at the Lady Jaguar Field.

Tech (11-10) will complete the three-game series on Sunday with a single game at 1 p.m.

LA Tech 13, Southern 4

Kristen Miles and Janna Frandrup each recorded four hits as Louisiana Tech run-ruled Southern 13-4 in six innings in the first game of the doubleheader.

The Lady Techsters scored in every inning but the first while registering 17 hits on the day, including five extra base hits led by Meghan Knowles second home run of the season.

Tech took an early 2-0 advantage in the top of the second inning as Knowles two-run blast to centerfield scored Frandrup, who had reached on an infield single. The Lady Techsters plated two more runs in the top of the third inning as Amanda Krueger led off with a single and eventually scored on a wild pitch while Miles singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Alayna Kipp.

After the Lady Techsters added a solo run in the fourth on an RBI double by Dacia Hale scoring Frandrup, LA Tech put the game out of reach with a five-run fifth inning.

Miles and Melanie Goff both reached on singles in the top of the fifth and then scored on a two-run single by Frandrup down the left field line, making the score 7-0. Hale then drove home her second run of the day with a single followed immediately by a two-run double by Anna Cross.

Southern answered in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs on three hits and two LA Tech errors. Tech starter Michelle Jones worked a clean first four innings before giving way to Goff in the fifth after the Lady Jaguars scored two runs. Goff allowed two more runs to score before retiring the final batter.

Tech scored its final three runs of the game in the top of the sixth inning as Miles singled and Erin Kipp doubled to put runners on second and third. Goff followed with an RBI single followed by Hailey Winter's sacrifice fly and Frandrup's run-scoring double.

Jones (7-5) picked up the win, allowing three runs on two hits and two walks while striking out six. Goff allowed one unearned run on one hit and one walk in 1.2 innings of action.

Offensively, Tech was led by Miles (4-4, three runs), Frandrup (4-4, 3 runs, 3 RBI), Krueger (2-4, 1 run), Kipp (1-4, 1 run), Goff (2-3, 2 runs, 1 RBI), Alayna Kipp (1 RBI), Winter (1 RBI), Knowles (1-3, 1 run, 2 RBI), Hale (2-3, 1 run, 2 RBI), Cross (1-3, 2 RBI) and Cassie Krieg (1 run).

Mel Goff recorded three hits and four RBI and Anna Cross hit her second collegiate home run as the Lady Techsters defeated Southern 11-6 in the second game of the day.

Tech scored in five of seven frames as the Lady Techsters banged out 14 hits in the win.

Kristen Miles singled with one out in the top of the first and then scored on a single by Erin Kipp and a subsequent fielding error by the Southern centerfielder, making the score 1-0. Mel Goff followed with an RBI single scoring Kipp as Tech took the early lead.

After Southern scored a run in the bottom of the first off Tech starter Janna Frandrup, the Lady Techsters answered in the second as Meghan Knowles singled and scored on Cross' two-run blast, making the score 4-1.

Southern responded in the bottom of the third inning, tying the game at 4-4 by scoring three runs on two hits and one LA Tech error. Goff came on in relief of Frandrup during the frame and eventually worked out of the inning.

The score remained tied until the top of the fifth inning when Tech scored on an RBI double by Goff, a run-scoring single by Frandrup and a sacrifice fly by Knowles, giving the Lady Techsters a 7-4 lead.

After Goff worked a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the fifth, Tech added onto its lead in the top of the sixth. Following a walk by Cross and a single by Amanda Krueger, the Lady Techsters executed the double steal for the first run of the inning. Miles then walked and Erin Kipp was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Goff, who promptly laced a two-run single to left field making the score 10-4.

Southern scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-out, two-run double off of reliever Erin Kipp.

Tech added a solo run in the seventh as Cassie Krieg singled and then scored on Cross' RBI double to left center, making the score 11-6.

Cross worked a scoreless seventh in the circle, allowing only a leadoff walk before retiring three straight batters.

Goff (1-1) picked up the win in relief, allowing only one hit in 3.0 innings of action.

Offensively, Tech was led by Goff (3-5, 1 run, 4 RBI), Cross (2-3, 2 runs, 3 RBI, SB), Knowles (2-3, 1 run, 1 RBI), Alayna Kipp (2-4, 1 run, SB), Krueger (1-4, 1 run, 1 SB), Miles (1-3, 3 runs), Erin Kipp (1-4, 1 run), Frandrup (1-3, 1 RBI), Krieg (1-1) and Janine Godwin (1 run).
