LAFAYETTE, La. - When Louisiana Tech steps on the floor at Earl K. Long Gym to face UL-Lafayette on Saturday at 12 p.m., it will be just another game for the Lady Techsters head coach Tyler Summitt.
Since Summitt was hired in April, he has preached the same message over and over and over to his team. Focus on the process, and the results will take care of themselves.
Through the first two games of the season, the results have been varied with LA Tech recording an impressive road win at Stephen F. Austin and a road loss at Northwestern State. Summitt's assessment of his team's ability to focus on the process for 40 minutes of the game is pointed.
"We have allowed other things to affect our effort at times and that cannot happen," Summitt said. "Whether it is missing shots on the offensive end or being called for a questionable foul ... whatever it is, we can't allow that to affect our effort. Effort is the one thing that is 100 percent in our control."
In its 76-69 come-from-behind win at Stephen F. Austin, Tech shot the basketball at a very high rate, hitting 51 percent of its field goals, 59 percent of its three-pointers and 75 percent of its free throws. In its 69-57 loss to Northwestern State, Tech's shooting percentages were on the opposite end of the spectrum as the Lady Techsters hit 33 percent of their field goals and only 4-of-36 from the three-point line.
In addition to getting its shooting touch base, LA Tech must also cut down on turnovers (42 in two games) and improve defensively as opponents are shooting 50 percent from the field in two games.
"It's a process," Summitt said. "Everything is a process. We have to become a 40-minute team. We have to defend for 40 minutes. We have to execute for 40 minutes. Most of all, we have to give 100 percent effort for 40 minutes."
Sophomore JaQuan Jackson (14.0 ppg, 6-15 three-pointers), freshman Tiara Davenport (13.5 ppg, 77% FG) and senior Kelia Shelton (10.0 ppg, 8.5 rpg) are Tech's top three scorers through the first two games of the year. Seniors Chrisstasia Walter (9.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 4.5 apg) and Whitney Frazier (7.0 ppg, 4.5 rpg) are also double digit threats on any given night.
UL-Lafayette (2-0) has picked up wins over Lamar (75-55) and Xavier (69-53) in its first two games of the season as the Ragin' Cajuns have relied on defense. UL-Lafayette has held its opponents to only 33 percent shooting and 6-of-27 from the three-point line while forcing 20 turnovers per game.
Keke Veal (15.5 ppg) and Jaylyn Gordon (15.0 ppg) lead the Ragin' Cajuns in scoring while Simone Fields (9.5 ppg, 8.0 rpg), Kia Wilrdge (7.5 ppg) and Adrienne Prejean (7.5 ppg) have also contributed offensively.
LA Tech leads the all-time series against UL-Lafayette 39-0, including a 16-0 mark in Lafayette.
