RUSTON -
Chrisstasia Walter recorded a triple double and
Whitney Frazier added a double double as Louisiana Tech defeated LSU-Alexandria 91-36 Saturday night in the final exhibition tune-up before the start of the regular season.
Walter scored 11 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and dished out 10 assists while also adding five steals. Although the triple double won't count in the Lady Techster official record book due to the fact it was an exhibition game, the feat is rare.
Only three triple doubles have been recorded in the 40-year history of LA Tech women's basketball.
"I am very proud of Chrisstasia," said Tech head coach Tyler Summitt. "The crazy thing is there are still things she can improve on. She is a very talented young lady and when she plays hard, that is what can happen. We need that consistent effort from her and from everybody else. I really think she has bought into her role."
Walter wasn't the only Lady Techster stuffing the stat sheet Saturday night as Frazier added 18 points, 10 rebounds and five steals. JaQuan Jackson scored 17 points and Kelia Shelton added 13 points, nine rebounds and six assists. As a team, Tech recorded 20 assists on 32 made field goals.
"We liked how we shared the basketball," Summitt said. "You saw Chrisstasia with 10 assists and Kelia with 6 assists. We did share the basketball. At times that caused some turnovers when we tried to be too unselfish so that's another area to get better at. I was proud of how unselfish we were."
Tech also shared the scoring. All nine players that suited up for LA Tech scored in the game as freshman Tiara Davenport added nine points and four rebounds. Savanna Langston scored eight points, Ruby Richie and Kanedria Andrews six points each and Kevione Moten three points along with seven rebounds.
Tech was never threatened in the game. Although the first year NAIA Generals competed for 40 minutes, the Lady Techsters built an early double digit lead before pushing it out to 50-19 at the half. Tech outscored LSU-A 41-17 over the final 20 minutes of play.
Tech outrebounded the much smaller LSU-A team 61-27, including 21 offensive rebounds that led to 21 second chance points.
The Lady Techsters shots 45 percent (32-71) for the game, including 7-of-24 from the three-point line and 20-of-25 from the free throw line. LSU-Alexandria shot 25 percent (15-59) from the field, 3-of-20 from the three-point line and 3-of-7 from the free throw line.
Tech did commit 19 turnovers.
"We need to improve on our intensity in a 40 minute game," Summitt said. "We need to be ready to play for 40 minutes straight. We saw moments where we had it. We saw moments where we didn't have it.
"Whether you want to preach a 40 minute game or a 0-0 score, every possession counts. That's what championship teams do. That is how this program was built. They played hard no matter who they were playing, no matter who the opponent was and not matter what scoreboard said. That is what we have to do."
The Lady Techsters open up the regular season Nov. 15 at Stephen F. Austin at William R. Johnson Coliseum in Nacogdoches, Texas. The contest can be heard on KXKZ 107.5 FM.
