Louisiana Tech had four honors bestowed upon three players Tuesday as Conference USA announced its All-Freshman Team.
Defensive lineman Deldrick Canty and defensive back Secdrick Cooper were honored at their positions while Carlos Henderson was named All-Freshman as both a wide receiver and a kick return specialist.
Canty played in nine games this season as a true freshman, registering 11 total tackles (seven solo, four assisted). Of his four tackles for a loss of 19 yards, three were sacks for a loss of 18 yards. A native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Canty was credited with three quarterback hurries this year.
Cooper played in all 13 games this season as he accumulated 14 total tackles (11 solo, three assisted) and one pass break-up. He registered a season-high five tackles (all solo) in a 59-10 win over Western Kentucky on Nov. 1 and his lone solo tackle against UTEP on Oct. 4 was a sack for a loss of seven yards in Tech's 55-3 win over the Miners. The Marrero, Louisiana product also recovered a fumble against Marshall in the Conference USA Championship Game.
A redshirt freshman from New Orleans, Henderson proved to be one of the most dynamic freshmen in the country this season with 1,285 all-purpose yards to his credit, an average of 116.82 all-purpose yards per game. In Henderson's 11 games played this season he has recorded 59 rushing yards on 10 carries with a touchdown, 476 receiving yards and four touchdowns on 25 carries with a long reception of 72 yards and 750 kickoff return yards on 29 returns, including a 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against WKU. Twice Henderson posted 100-plus receiving games with 100 yards against UTEP and 114 yards on two catches in a 76-31 win over Rice on Nov. 29 to clinch the C-USA West Division title.
Henderson is ranked fifth in the nation this year with an average of 68.2 kickoff return yards per game and ranked 17th in the nation this season with an average of 25.9 yards per kickoff return.
The Conference USA All-Freshman Team was selected by a vote of the league's coaches with coaches unable to vote for their own players.
Louisiana Tech is currently preparing to face Illinois in the Zaxby's Heart of Dallas Bowl on Dec. 26 at the historic Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas.
