Box Score

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - Marshall used a late inning offensive explosion to record an 8-4 win over Louisiana Tech Sunday afternoon in the season finale for the Lady Techsters in West Virginia.

After LA Tech freshman Taylor Penn gave her team a 4-3 lead with a one-out run scoring double in the top of the sixth inning, Marshall answered by plating five runs in the bottom half of the frame to take the lead. Tech was set down in order in the top of the seventh to end the game.

Following a sweep at the hands of the Thundering Herd on Saturday, LA Tech (19-33, 7-16 C-USA) came out strong on Sunday, plating three runs in the top of the first inning to take an early advantage.

Anna Cross led the game off with a single to left field and advanced to second on an error by the Marshall outfielder. Following a sacrifice bunt by Kristen Miles, Cross scored on a wild pitch giving the Lady Techsters a 1-0 lead.

With two outs in the inning, Janine Godwin was hit by a pitch and Katelynn Hill walked to put runners on first and second. Tori Charters then drove a double down the left field line, scoring both runners as the Lady Techsters upped their advantage to 3-0.

Marshall scored one run in the first and two more in the third to tie the game at 3-3. Offensively, the Lady Techsters struggled against Marshall reliever Lindsey Fradnek, who came on for starter Jordan Dixon after the first inning. Fradnek kept the Lady Techsters quiet until the top of the sixth inning when Penn came through with her first career RBI.

Pauline Tufi led the frame off with a single before giving way to pinch runner Lindsey Neyland. Godwin then followed with a ground ball where the Herd defense tried to throw out the lead runner, but Neyland beat the throw to second giving Tech runners on first and second.

Penn then line an RBI double to right centerfield, scoring Neyland and giving Tech a 4-3 lead. With runners on second and third and only one out, the Lady Techsters had an opportunity to add to their advantage. However, just like in Saturday's doubleheader loss, Tech was unable to record a run-scoring out or hit as Marshall got out of the jam.

The Herd then used five hits and one error in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away.

Tufi (13-10) took the loss, allowing five runs - four earned - on nine hits in 2.1 innings of action.

Cross (1-3, 1 run), Charters (1-1, 2 RBI), Penn (1-2, 1 RBI), Neyland (run), Godwin (1 run), Hill (1 run) and Tufi (1-3) led Tech offensively.
