RUSTON - The Louisiana Tech tennis team went down to the wire in a pair of midweek matches with one resulting in a victory and the other being nullified by more inclement weather.

On Tuesday at the LA Tech Tennis Complex, the Lady Techsters won a hard-fought 4-3 match against ASA Junior College. The following morning, they were just two points away from defeating Texas State before the rain struck.

"ASA was a great win for us," head coach Chad Camper said in defeating the No. 1 ranked NJCAA team in the nation. "They are very powerful and well coached. I told the players from the beginning this is a great team that is hungry for Division I wins. We ended up finishing at 9:30 under the lights and had a great turnout which really helped us get that fourth point."

The doubles point ended up being the deciding factor as both squads claimed three singles victory on the match, but it was Tarrannum Handa's 7-6, 7-5 win at No. 4 which was the clincher.

"Tarrannum played lights out tennis and Haley Ballinger also stepped up big with her win," Camper added. "Jazmin Britos played flawless which is exactly what we needed. Our doubles was a nail biter, but our third doubles came up big. It was a great win versus a great team."

After LA Tech (2-7) and ASA (3-2) split the top two doubles courts, the duo of Britos and Taylor Capannolo went into a tiebreaker at court No. 3 and pulled it out, 7-6 (5).

With rain threatening in the north Louisiana area, the Techsters moved up their match with Texas State on Wednesday and decided to play singles first with hopes of getting the match in.

LA Tech ended up dominating the top half of the lineup with wins by Britos at No. 1 in three sets, a 7-6, 6-0 win by Alexandra Starkova at No. 2 and a straight sets victory by Marta Sramkova at No. 3 which she breezed through.

On the other end, Texas State took victories on courts No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 which knotted the match up at 3-3 coming down to the doubles point.

The Techsters won at No. 2 and were two points away at No. 3 from sealing their second straight victory before the rains came.

"Texas State is a gritty team with a lot of depth," Camper said. "Coach Plunkett has done an amazing job with her team. We struggled down low but Marta got a quick win and Alexandra at two was just the win we needed. After being tied with doubles playing, the rain came in quick. With indoor not being an option this week, we had to plan and hope for the best."

LA Tech returns to action on Saturday, March 21 when they travel to face Jackson State at 10 a.m. There is also a potential for a Saturday afternoon match at home against Grambling State.
