LA Tech vs. Rice box
LA Tech spring stats
HOUSTON - Louisiana Tech played competitive tennis against Conference USA opponent and nationally-ranked Rice, but fell 5-1 on Saturday afternoon at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
After struggling in doubles with just two total games won on the three courts combined, LA Tech (7-10) regrouped and challenged 30th-ranked Rice (13-8) on several courts in singles play.
The toughest task was at No. 1 where Alexandra Starkova took on the 25th best player in the country in Natalie Beazant. Starkova was down 4-1 in the first set, but rallied back to win two straight games and then had two points to pull it even before Beazant rallied and eventually took the match, 6-3, 6-3.
It was a similar situation at No. 2 with Jazmin Britos finding herself down 6-3, 5-2 before coming back to even it at 5-all in the second set. However, the Owls' Liat Zimmermann held serve and broke Britos to pull out the victory.
There was another rally at No. 3 and this one came from Marta Sramkova. After dropping the first set, the sophomore rebounded to take the second and then extended her winning streak to seven matches by coming out on top, 10-7, in the third set super breaker.
Tarrannum Handa also had a gutsy performance at No. 4, forcing a third set before losing 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to Savannah Durkin.
The fifth point for the Owls came at No. 5 with a straight sets win by Solomiya Zinko over Taly Merker.
The Lady Techsters will return to the same facility in a few days with the start of the C-USA Tournament beginning on Thursday, April 16 at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
