RUSTON - Bailey Allen struck out a career-high seven and Janine Godwin hit a go-ahead two-run home run to lift Louisiana Tech to a 3-1 win over UL-Monroe Wednesday night at the Lady Techster Softball Complex.
Allen (6-1) picked up her sixth win of the season, allowing only one run on six hits and no walks while striking out seven in the complete-game performance. Allen continued a streak of 23 straight innings that LA Tech pitchers have not issued a walk to an opposing batter.
Tech (25-10) avenged a season-opening loss to ULM (24-13). The two teams will meet again in Monroe on April 21.
ULM starter Melanie Coyne (9-7) was the tough luck loser, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks while striking out two.
After neither pitcher allowed a base runner through the first two innings, ULM finally found some offense in the top of the third inning. A pair of punt singles by Sidney Coy and Rochelle Roberts put runners on the corners and Faith Bohack came through with a two-out RBI single, giving ULM the 1-0 advantage.
Tech responded immediately. Godwin drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a single by Katie Smith to left field. Following a sacrifice bunt by Karlee Jensen that moved the runners to second and third, Kristen Miles recorded an infield single to the hole at shortstop, scoring Godwin and tying the game at 1-1.
ULM tried to take the lead in the top of the fourth. With two outs Amye Barre singled off the top of the left centerfield wall. ??? Mackey then doubled over the head of Godwin in centerfield, but Godwin's relay through to Jensen was perfect as the freshman second baseman then fired it home to Kassie Harris who tagged out Barre for the final out of the frame.
Godwin struck again in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs and pinch runner Casey Ingram on first, Godwin sent Coyne's offering high over the centerfield fence for a two-run home run - her fourth of the year. Tech led 3-1.
Allen retired ULM in order in both the fifth and sixth innings. The Warhawks then led the seventh off with a single by Barre, but Allen was once again up to the challenge, retiring the next three batters to end the game.
Tech was led offensively by Godwin (1-1, 2 runs, 2 RBI, HR), Miles (1-3, 1 RBI), Tori Charters (1-3), Anna Cross (1-3), Smith (1-3) and Ingram (1 run).
The Lady Techsters return to action Saturday with a doubleheader at UAB at 1 p.m.
