Jan. 3, 2016 BATON ROUGE, La. - Louisiana Tech tied a program record 10 All-Louisiana first and second team honors Sunday as the Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) announced its annual All-Louisiana football team honors.
The 10 first and second team honors ties the program record of 10 received following the 1999 season. Tim Rattay, currently an assistant coach for the Bulldogs, led that 1999 delegation as LA Tech's quarterback.
Similar to 1999, a Bulldog quarterback was atop the state honors as Jeff Driskel was named the state's first team quarterback as well as Louisiana's Newcomer of the Year. Driskel was joined by running back Kenneth Dixon, receiver Trent Taylor, offensive lineman Darrell Brown and defensive tackle Vernon Butler on the first team.
Defensive lineman Jaylon Ferguson, defensive backs Bryson Abraham and Xavier Woods, offensive lineman Jens Danielsen and placekicker Jonathan Barnes were named to the second team.
On the combined first and second teams with the few honorable mention selections, LSU had 11 total players selected, Louisiana Tech 10 and McNeese State seven.
The teams were selected by a panel of LSWA members based on nominations supplied by the football media relations directors of the various schools in the state. Media relations/sports information directors could not vote for their players, but other LSWA voters could cast ballots for anyone on the ballot.
All voting was done based on the conclusion of the regular season and did not include stats accumulated in post-season bowl or playoff contests.
In addition to state newcomer, Driskel, the Florida transfer to Louisiana Tech, earned Conference USA Newcomer honors as he guided the Bulldogs offense to a school record 10 consecutive games of 400-plus yards. He finished the season completing 281 of 450 passes for 4,033 yards and 27 touchdowns ââ'¬" an impressive 62.4 completion percentage ââ'¬" with an efficiency rating of 153.97. He also ran for 323 yards and five touchdowns.
Dixon, a first team All-Conference USA selection, became the first player in Tech history to post three separate 1,000-yard rushing seasons as he ran for 1,070 yards and 19 touchdowns in 2015 to go along with 467 yards receiving and seven more touchdowns through the air to his credit.
Taylor was one of the nation's most prolific receivers in 2015, finishing his junior year with 1,282 receiving yards and nine touchdowns on 99 catches .He averaged 98.6 receiving yards in his 13 games and was the third receiver in the nation to surpass the 1,000-receiving yard mark.
Brown was a rock-solid anchor on an offensive line that ranked 41st in the nation in sacks allowed and tackles for loss allowed, starting every game at left tackle.
Butler was one of the most dominant defensive tackles in the country, 50 total tackles with 10 (one-fifth of all his stops) coming for a loss of 26 yards. He was credited with eight pass break-ups, one fumble forced and one recovered.
Ferguson receives All-Louisiana second team honors adding to his accolades this year after being named Freshman All-America. The St. Francisville native led the Bulldogs in tackles for a loss (15.0) and tied for the lead in sacks (6.0) this year and was tied for the team lead with eight quarterback hurries.
Danielsen was another rock-solid anchor on an offensive line that ranked 41st in the nation in sacks allowed and tackles for loss allowed. The Wichita, Kansas native started almost every game at right tackle this season.
Abraham could have been renamed "Mr. Pick Six" this year as all three of his interceptions were returned for touchdowns. He added a fourth score on a fumble return to go with his team-best 16 pass break-ups and 58 total tackles on the season. A native of Jennings, Abraham also forced two fumbles and blocked a kick.
Woods tied Abraham for the team lead in interceptions (3), forced two fumbles and was credited with two pass break-ups while tallying 7.5 tackles for a loss in his season of 56 total tackles.
Barnes was a perfect 60-for-60 on point after touchdown attempts and 22-for-26 (84.6 percent) on field goal attempts, including a perfect 2-for-2 on 50-yard field goals with a career-long 50-yard kick against UL-Lafayette on Oct. 3 then matching that against Arkansas State in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl on Dec. 19. The Baton Rouge native was a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award this season.
