GULF SHORES, Ala. - Big innings were the story of the day for the Lady Techsters as Louisiana Tech (3-1) swept a pair of games on Saturday in Gulf Shores, Ala. at the Sand Dollar Classic.
Louisiana Tech opened the day with a game at noon against Jackson State and it didn't take the Lady Techsters long to put a crooked number on the scoreboard.
In the second inning after Krysta Tutsch singled and Katie Smith walked, Berkley Calapp got Louisiana Tech on the scoreboard with an RBI double down the left field line scoring pinch runner Courtney Lowe. Kassie Harris followed with a double to right center, scoring Smith and Calapp.
After a Jessica Ball walk, Anna Cross launched a three run bomb down the left field line, busting the game open. The long ball gave Louisiana Tech a 6-0 lead and gave Cross her second homerun in as many days.
A batter later freshman Morgan Turkoly blasted a solo shot to left field to extend the Lady Techsters lead to 7-0. Later in the inning Lindsey Neyland would score on a Smith groundout giving Louisiana Tech their eighth and final run of the second inning.
In the fourth inning Turkoly led off the inning with a triple and scored on a Neyland ground out later in the inning. LA Tech's final run came on Kassie Harris' first home run of the season, a solo home run to right field.
In the circle Bailey Allen (1-1) had an incredible game, tossing five innings and only surrendering five hits. Allen struck out 10 Tiger batters in the contest and did not issue any walks.
Preslee Gallaway entered the circle for the Lady Techsters in game two. Coming off of a stellar debut, she duplicated her performance, not allowing a hit until there were two outs remaining in the fourth inning.
LA Tech got on the board in first inning when Taria Page lined a two-out single to score Tori Charters from second and giving Tech an early 1-0 lead.
Gallaway kept the Bison hitters in check and the Techster bats went to work in the fourth inning. Harris doubled to right center and Karlee Jensen followed with a two-out single up the middle to score Harris and give Tech a 2-0 lead.
Louisiana Tech added four insurance runs in the fifth inning. Cross and Charters reached to open the inning and wild pitch put the two Lady Techsters in scoring position for Page. Page delivered with a two-RBI single to left field.
Neyland pinch ran for Page and wasted no time stealing second base. On the following pitch Neyland stole third and the throw down sailed into left field allowing Neyland to score and stretching the Lady Techster lead out to 5-0.
Katie Smith stepped to the plate and unleashed a no-doubt home run to left field, her first home run of the season.
With a six run lead, Lipscomb wasn't going down without a fight. After two infield singles and an error, the score sat at 6-1, but the Bison still had two on. Fenichel then belted a three-run home run to left center and cut the deficit to 6-4.
Bailey Allen was the summoned from the bullpen and after allowing a double, retired the next two Lipscomb hitters to stop the bleeding.
Allen got the Bison in order in the seventh, sealing a 6-4 victory for the Lady Techsters.
Preslee Gallaway (2-0) picked up the victory in the contest, her second of the season. Gallaway threw 5.1 innings and gave up just four hits. The freshman gave up three earned runs, but struck out four. Allen picked up her first save of the season.
The 3-1 start to the season is the best since 2007, when Louisiana Tech started the season 5-0.
