RUSTON ââ'¬" Louisiana Tech senior catcher Krysta Tutsch hit a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to tie it and freshman Morgan Turkoly led off the bottom of the 14th with a solo bomb to lead the Lady Techsters to a 3-2 win over UTSA in the first game of the Conference USA doubleheader Saturday.
Tech (23-15, 5-6 C-USA) came back in the nightcap and won 4-0 over UTSA (16-27, 8-9 C-USA) behind a complete-game shutout performance by freshman Preslee Gallaway.
The two teams will play the third and final game of the series Sunday with a 1 p.m. start time.
Game 1
With Tech trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh and down to its final strike, Tutsch took a 3-2 pitch and launched it deep over the left centerfield fence, sending the game into extra innings.
Tech starter Bailey Allen and UTSA starter Lizzy Fox matched each other pitch for pitch in the circle until the bottom of the 14th inning. That's when Turkoly drove a Fox offering deep over the centerfield wall for the walk-off win.
With the home run, Turkoly tied the LA Tech record with a home run in her fourth straight game, matching Amberly Waits and Heather Doiron's record.
The home run gave Allen the win as the sophomore improved to 10-5, tossing 14.0 innings while allowing two runs ââ'¬" one earned ââ'¬" on eight hits and four walks while striking out eight in the complete performance. The 14 innings pitched are the second most in a single game for a LA Tech player, trailing only the 18 thrown by Lindsey Meadows against Fresno State in 2002.
UTSA took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. With runners on first and second and two outs, Randee Crawford singled sharply to left field where a bobble allowed the runner from second to score on the error.
The Roadrunners extended their lead in the top of the sixth inning as a bloop single to left centerfield scored the insurance run.
Tech entered the bottom of the seventh with only one hit. However, Turkoly singled sharply to left field with one out. After Taria Page was retired for the second out of the inning, Tutsch hit her third home run of the year to tie the game at 2-2.
Fox (7-9) was tagged with the hard luck loss, allowing three runs on eight hits and four walks while striking out five.
Game 2
Freshman Preslee Gallaway followed Bailey Allen's solid performance in the circle with one of her own, allowing only four hits and one walk while tossing 7.0 shutout innings as the Lady Techsters down UTSA 4-0.
Gallaway (6-1) stayed in control for the entire game, allowing UTSA to record only one inning with multiple base runners while picking up her sixth victory of the season.
UTSA hurler Nicole Merrill (3-6) allowed only four hits but issued nine walks, while allowing four runs. Tech took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning as Katie Smith recorded an RBI groundout, scoring pinch runner Jessica Ball from third base. Tech added a single run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
In the fourth, Tori Charters drew a two-out walk and then scored from first on an RBI single by Anna Cross off the centerfield fence, upping Tech's advantage to 2-0.
In the fifth inning, Morgan Turkoly walked and Krysta Tutsch followed with a line drive infield single putting runners on the corner. Kassie Harris then laid down a bunt single, scoring Turkoly from third for the third run of the game.
Tech plated the final run in the sixth on a Turkoly RBI single, scoring Charters.
