Louisiana Tech head coach Skip Holtz

Opening statement:
"The spring is officially over with this scrimmage today. We broke this up from an offensive and defensive standpoint. We needed to see a lot of guys individually today. I thought there were some goods and bads on both sides of the ball. I thought some guys stepped up and did some pretty good things today. It is also pretty evident that we need every practice we can get to get the consistency on both sides of the ball. I thought some guys stepped up today and made some plays. We made some plays on defense, we made some plays on offense with the ball in the air. I thought for the most part, the quarterbacks did a pretty good job of protecting the ball. I know one of Ryan Higgins' interceptions was a deep ball that he laid up. I thought there were a lot of positive things we could build on. The thing I am trying to evaluate are the attitude, the togetherness, the physical nature and I thought they did a nice job. We are certainly a long ways away from where we need to be, but I think our depth chart is starting to take shape."

On Ryan Higgins' performance:
"The game has really slowed down for Ryan. I think he is doing a really good job. Even the one that he threw over the middle, even though it went for a touchdown because Xavier Woods pulled up, I thought that was a bad read. If you can throw the ball the number of times that he threw it, and I wanted to see if I could put the ball in his hands. I only had two running backs and I did not want to beat them up today and see them carry the ball 100 times. I wanted to see the quarterbacks execute. I think Ryan has a great grasp on the offense and the game has really slowed down and he is making some really good decisions with the ball out there."

On the running backs:
"I think they are doing a really good job. When you look at the spring, they have caught the ball on over 90 percent. They are catching the ball really well and all of a sudden they become check downs for your quarterbacks. They become easy opportunities to get rid of the ball and eliminate sacks. You can get those guys in open space. I think both of them really did a nice job today. I think it is unfortunate that Jaqwis Dancy got dinged and was not able to go today because he could have used every one of these reps both last weekend and this week. I think Boston Scott and Jarred Craft are doing some really good things. They broke some tackles today, they ran north and south and they ran hard."

On the wide receivers:
"Alfred Smith and Kam McKnight are both doing some really good things. I was not trying to feature Trent Taylor. I've got 99 catches a year ago of him on film doing what he does. I think having those two guys step up, it was great to see Alfred make that play at the end on the deep ball where he went up for it. I think both of those guys are doing a really good job. I would have liked to have seen [Rhashid] Bonnette and [JaVonte] Woodard continue to make their strides forward. We still have too many busts out there at wide receiver. I think some guys are really starting to separate themselves and starting to identify that two-deep and seeing what the depth chart looks like."

On Jaylon Ferguson:
"Jaylon Ferguson definitely made an impact. He made his presence felt. It is a great growing part of our program because he is going to make Shane Carpenter a better player. He is going to make him a better player. Then as Shane gets better, Jaylon is going to have to improve."
