MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- No. 6 Louisiana Tech was attempting to pull off the first upset of the C-USA Tournament, but a tough doubles point loss and bad breaks in singles led to a 4-0 loss to No. 3 North Texas in the quarterfinals on Friday afternoon at the Adams Tennis Complex.
LA Tech (15-7) grabbed a win at No. 2 in doubles and had three match points at the No. 1 spot to try to steal the doubles point. However, 71st-ranked North Texas (13-9) fought back to win it in a tiebreaker and then take straight sets victories on courts three, four and six.
"That is the closest we have ever come to taking the doubles point from North Texas," head coach Chad Camper said. "Even though we dropped the doubles point, all six courts fought very hard in singles. We knew it would be extremely difficult, but the players did not let that stop them. They were fighting to the end as they always do."
Just like in the first round, the duo of Jazmin Britos and Marta Sramkova dominated in doubles on court two to the tune of a 6-2 victory over Minying Liang and Agustina Valenzuela.
Alexandra Starkova and Zoe Chen got up 5-3 on court one versus Maria Kononova and Tamuna Kutubidze, but the Mean Green fought back to even it up at 5-5. Despite nursing a shoulder injury suffered in the match, the senior Starkova battled through it and nearly pulled out the win with Chen but lost 7-1 in the breaker.
The Techsters had some hard, decisive points that did not go their way to start out singles, going down a set in five of the six matches.
North Texas pulled out a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 4, followed by a 6-2, 6-4 decision at No. 3. The deciding point soon came at No. 6 as senior Manoela Chiacchio, who was down a set but grinded out two games to pull to within 5-4 in the second, dropped the match 6-4, 6-4.
Britos, who was a combined 3-0 in singles and doubles this tournament, had match point on court two (up 6-3, 5-4) before the match was halted.
Also before play was stopped, Starkova and Alba Escalona Perny were one game away from sending their matches into a third set.
The senior trio of Starkova, Chiacchio and Taly Merker will go down as one of the greatest in LA Tech Tennis history. They have combined to win 52 dual matches as Lady Techsters as well as 312 individual matches.
"I am really proud of the seniors and their careers at LA Tech," Camper said. "They have built a program, something few people can say they did. Not only was it a pleasure to be their coach, but to be a part of their lives was even better. They will always be Lady Techsters."
